I know Iowa is a big state, but anybody from northwest Iowa/Sioux City have an opinion about the oil refinery that is to be built near Elk Point, SD?

I heard about it on the SD forum, and it appears that quite a number of people are against it because of the water consumption issues of a refinery related to the Missouri River.

There's just as many people in favor of it in the area. It's need we have to have more refineries, I don't think it's going to have the impact many opponents think it will, and this area needs the jobs.

You would think the company would do its research... Or you hope anyway.
I really support it... And it's supposed to be the "greenest" refinery.. |

I also support the refinery too and think that there would be more positive than negative.
The issue is going to a public vote in Union County in June and if the voters vote in favor of Hyperion, the public has spoken. If the oppoents are trying to pull additional red tape when Union County citizens have spoken and outvoted the opponents, the the opponents are being sore losers and causing more trouble than what is needed. I have read the issue in the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, KELO (of Sioux Falls), and with other sources. My viewpoint is that the opponents of the refinery are trying to scare the residents and scare the public and are getting dirty and undignified in their tactics. To build a new refinery, it would have to be environmentally friendly given the environmental laws, political environment, and advances in technology since the last refinery built in 1976. A number of refineries are updated and are not as dirty as they were in the older days. If done right, this refinery can set a good example to other preexisting and future refineries. |
