Some of the out-of-town rural houses are on or near old coal-mine property...which makes for some pretty neat woody hills and ravines.

The Centerville district has a very high graduation rate, around 90%, I believe. There isn't much of a TAG program in the high school, unfortunately. But having the Indian Hills campus in town is nice for letting students get a jump on college classes. I understand they're doing several career programs between the HS and IHCC and some senior year sponsored college classes.

As far as animals go, I think Mystic (and the rural parts) really don't have many regulations. There has been a big push for "dangerous animal insurance" ordinances in the county lately, so pit bulls and such might be out. Lots of kids in the area do 4H/FFA, so there's all kinds of animals being kept.
Thanks for the great info !

Some people mistake my Staffordshire Bull Terrier for a Pit Bull, but there is a world of differance between those breeds. A true Staffordshire Bull Terrier, as recognized by the AKC, is a direct bloodline dating back to England 150 years ago. There are 5 differant breeds of Bull Terriers, and unfortunately, some people want to lump them all together. The "Target Dog" is a Bull Terrier also.
Of course, some people are not very educated on breeds, as my neighbor down the street thought that my purebred Chocolate Lab was a Rottweiler !
FTR, Pitt's are more bulky and square bodied than the other breeds of Bull Terrier. My Staffordshire has a longer head and body than a Pit. A Pit has a very square head.

Default Mystic, Iowa

Got some more questions for you all. What are the utility bills like in the Mystic area? Where we are in Indiana, our high monthly winter bill for gas and electric is about $700, and our combined water/sewer/garbage bill is about $100-110. How about dial-up internet? Right now I got dirt cheap dial-up internet for $8.25 a month.

I want to thank you all for your kindness, for answering my barrage of questions. This will be a big move for us, and the more info we have, the easier it will be.
FYI, my mother is gaining weight, and is improving. She was down to 78 pounds, and now is up to 92 pounds. Her doctor appointment went good today, and we are going to try to schedule another appointment to see the Mystic house, soon. It is still for sale !!!

If you don't mind me asking, why Mystic? I mean, it's not like a place that people really move to, you know? Do you have family or friends there or what? I'm just a bit curious.

The area and the house appeals to us. The name of the town is quite extraordinary. We were looking, and still somewhat sorta looking, at the Spencer area, as I have a friend who lives there.

Northern Iowa is beautifull, but the winters are more rugged compared to southern Iowa. I do have some cousins in Sioux City, but we have not considered that area.

its good to see another bully owner in the area! i had one last year but unfortunately had to get rid of her since i moved back here to iowa from N Las Vegas...the only laws we have here about bullys are that they cant be off a leash if outside your house...that technically means not even off the leash in your backyard...im sure we are slowly adopting more BSL in the area(ottumwa has fully banned bully breeds) but its ok for right now...also, im a senior at CHS so as far as the school goes, its decent...only 600 kids or so...not to many problems to speak of though...only one that comes to mind is not many classes to choose from , but if your kids a freshman, they are going to have the basic classes anyways, so not really a big deal i guess...if you need to know anything else about the area, just ask...i have lived here pretty much my whole life so i got all the info you need! hahaha

Well, we are still stuck here. My daughter graduated 8th grade, as the top student in her school. She is now a freshman, and in all Honors classes. We wanted to get her out of here so badly, but it seems that everything is still on hold. Out of the 300 school systems in our state, ours is ranked 297. Yeah, 3rd from the bottom. The high school our daughter is attending, had a 36% graduation rate last year, and THAT was the percentage of the kids that made it to their senior year without dropping out, getting expelled, in jail, or murdered in gang violence.

Mystic is OK. It's just kind of a poor old boomtown that has deteriorated over the years. It's a little more run-down than Centerville, but not too bad. No real stores, just a bar "The Mystique/Coal Miner's Inn", a dinky little park, and an elementary school. They've got some civic minded people there in recent years who've done a lot to clean it up. Plus, they have the Mystic Goat Races...

If I had my choice, I would rather live in Centerville proper, or in the country between Centerville and Mystic (like two friends of mine). But Mystic is fine.

CHS is not a bad high school at all. I graduated from there and I turned out fine. Two big new additions lately, so good physical facilities. Good teaching staff, too. Pretty well covered in the extra-curricular field (the big sports, drama, speech, newspaper/yearbook). Highly rated band. Some co-courses/early degree programs with the local community college.

Some shortcomings: poor special ed. program, lack of AP courses, only one language offered, lack of diversity (students and staff), some generational poverty going on--fairly high dropout rate.

I hope your search goes well! Please message here or feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.
hey dont talk bad about mystic ya the are a lot of weird people but were are trying to bring mystic back with things like the hangmans army which is a cleaning the streets program that is wonderful mystic isnt so bad once you give it a try it used to be bigger then centerville
