My husband will be going to Palmer and we will be moving from a northern suburb of Chicago. I am a Hawkeye myself and am somewhat familiar with the QC. I was thinking McClellan hts or Bettendorf, but my husband is a small town boy and wants to live in the cornfields!
What would be a nice small town with excellent schools? And what would the commute be like for him or me if I can find a job? I would look for a job teaching at any area community college. TIA!!! |

Eldridge is a nice town.
Two of the area community colleges I know of are Muscatine and Scott - I believe the Community College in Moline is Black Hawk... but I could be wrong. |

Good luck at Palmer. My dad went there. Chiropractic is an excellent field.

We live in Clinton, it's a bit too far away for you probably (30 mi) and I'm not sure about the schools (no kids). I would certainly look at DeWitt. It's a gorgeous small town. We really wanted to live there when me moved to the area, but we couldn't find a house that'd work for us. Housing has really gone up there, but it's still worth a look.

I'd say keep pushing for McClellan.
With gas prices the way they are, I wouldn't want to have to drive into town for everything that can't be bought at Casey's... |

I'd recommend DeWitt. It's about 15 minutes with non-existent traffic compared to Chicago suburb commutes. McClellen is a fine neighborhood with low crime and big, beautiful, overly expensive homes but it's still in the same school districts as the low-rent, petty theft neighorhood down the hill. In other words, you'll be paying more than you should or could for an address but the amenties of being close to shopping, libraries, theaters, etc aren't there, and the school district is still going to be blend. I have heard that Davenport East is a better high school than West or North based on less crime, drugs, and graduation rates but I'm not sure.
Bettendorf is heavily sold by realtors as the Gold Coast of the QC. But be really careful and definitely see the neighborhood at night on different nights. Drugs have really become a problem in Bettendorf (the dirty little secret no one talks about) and some neighborhoods look great at day but not so great come nightfall. Eldrigde is a nice small town but one of my coworkers lives there and missed several days of work this year because the snow/ice made the commute to risky. She said, Eldrigde does a poor job of cleaning their streets after snow. Just my thoughts. |

Well I don't know many people that live at the base of the i-74 bridge or hang out around there.. not sure why anyone would be there or in an alley behind an old gas station. 4 Blocks is not enough to say that a city has a drug problem. I think it's safe to say that drug deals aren't a common site in at least 97% of Bettendorf's neighborhoods. It's a nice community.

McClellan Heights for sure! Very friendly neighborhood that hosts many many neighborhood get togethers....TGIF type of events. I can't say enough good things about the McClellan Heights area.
