After reading the subject line I decided to read this string. Hmmm...

Most likely the OP is long gone and has not been reading this string for a year. It is obvious that the OP picked the wrong neighborhood to inhabit. Every city has its good and bad areas. You have to do your homework. And since CB is really growing you will see an increase in certain kinds of crime that are associated with growth. It happens in most cities or suburbs when there is a sudden jump in population over a short period of time.

I used to live near Council Bluffs, and knew people who lived there. And I can say that the OP is right... to an extent. It all depends on the part of CB you are living in. In certain parts of CB, you will find a lot of unsavory people and activity. You are going to find those "people on a lower socioeconomic rung of Caucasian descent" no matter where you go. But I hate living in the midst of the big city ratrace anyway. I choose the quieter, laid-back style of living of a smaller community. Not necessarily a podunk town with a population of 12.... just someplace with less hustle & bustle of the city. All in all, Iowa is not a bad place to live though.

Chazmo, better not let Omaha Rocks hear you say that north Omaha is "trailer trash." I take offense to that statement. The fact is, there are some low income areas there, but it's certainly not as bad and crime ridden as people stereotype it to be. I happen to like that area a lot. Most of the neighborhoods up there are great.

That being said, I am a white male that went to IWCC, so I spent a good amount of time in Council Bluffs, day and night, and I was never mugged, beaten, yelled at, or treated badly by the police.

I think Council Bluffs is a great town. The east end certainly does have some charming older homes, like on Oakland Avenue, but the west end is just fine, in my opinion.

i've lived in cb for 7-8 years now, a transplant from the greater philly area. i've lived on both coasts, and can say for certain that CB is NOT all that bad.

To begin with, the west side of is certainly not the ghetto. there is a stip of crappy neighborhoods on the south side between 16th st, to about 6th st. in general the "south end" of town is kinda tight on cash so to speak. it's mostly smaller houses, and families who have lived there for at least a generation or 3.
on the north side of broadway, around 6th st, you have the minster ave neighborhood. it's pretty crappy there. most of the pizza places won't deliver there either... there are a couple of "projects", namely featherstone, cambridge green, and northgate, are the "wannabe" ghetto's. you get a lot of kids in there listening to rap music, who want to believe they are gangsta's and hard core. the problem is they will indeed rip your stuff off, and try to mug you.
aside from that, you wouldn't want to leave your stuff outside of any of the hotels, but thats true just about anywhere. i would avoid the ones on n16th st, as well as the one on broadway by the strip club. lots of drug action there, as well as other petty crime.
there is a pretty major drug problem here in CB, but there is a pretty major drug problem throughout the country as well. it does seem to be worse here than most places i have lived.

Now, as for CB being a bunch of trailer trash... well, there are a lot of trailer parks in cb. some are indeed pretty trashy. the one on 34th, behind arby's was pretty bad, thats gone now. the one behind the hotels on the s omaha bridge rd (right next to google) is pretty bad too. there are other really bad ones too. there are not so bad ones as well though. it is the midwest, and trailers are basically cheap living. it's not so much trailer trash here, as just plain redneck/hillbilly.

to another point... you do NOT have to pay NE + IA state taxes if you live in IA, and work in NE. not exactly at least.
you pay the HIGHER tax, and show proof of payment to the lower. so if NE is higher, you pay NE, and then submit proof of payment to IA, in liue of payment. christ people, hire a CPA, or learn how to read the tax laws yourself.

oh, and to anyone who claims CB is a bad as north O... give me a shout. i will happily drop your stupid ass off in north O, so you can see for yourself how stupid you are.
just another midwest punk, who wants to talk big.

This is true. If you are paying both, it's your own fault.

I don't mean to sound overly condescending, but I grew up in the NYC metro area and spent most of my childhood hanging out in NYC. Since then, I have lived in a variety of places and think most of the criticisms regarding CB are from Midwesterners (especially Omahans, since many seem to love refering to CB as "Counciltucky") who are so self-conscious about being from this part of the country. Guess what? The rest of the country thinks Omaha is pretty lame, too. I moved here from the South and you should have seen the look on people's faces when I told them I was moving to Omaha. Whatever. My point is no one cares about any of us, so quit picking on eachother.

Second, my spouse and I sold our Omaha home to move to CB. We much prefer it over here. We didn't like living in Omaha. Our neighbors were rude and noisy (Hearthstone neighborhood). Overall, it wasn't a good fit for us. We were often advised to move to Midtown, but I am afraid many of those homes are poorly maintained. I have heard way too many horror stories about sinking $ into these homes because they have been neglected for far too long. A granite countertop doesn't mean the home has been cared for. There seems to be less pride in ownership than in a place like Charlottesville, VA. I know there are exceptions, but those homes are usually in the 300k and up price range. But I digress...

We live in a nice neighborhood that is in close proximity to Wabash Trace, Lake Manawa, etc. We enjoy the outdoors lifestyle that this part of the metro affords. Granted, we would prefer to live in a place like Oregon, but that isn't happening anytime soon. If we have to stay here to earn a good living, then this is the spot for us. Certainly, it isn't for everyone, but I question why people around here care so much to take the time and effort to poke fun at CB. This town as come a long way and it will continue to improve. There are crime issues on both sides of the bridge. I know people who had their cars broken into at Lake Zorinsky. It happens everywhere around here.

And before anyone accuses me of slamming on Omaha, I just want to say that we also enjoy being super close to downtown. We are also not above driving 25 miles to see our friends in West Omaha.

I am just sick of all the Counciltucky talk.

Well if you don't like people slamming Council Bluffs, then don't slam Omaha. It goes both ways.
