Downtown Cedar Rapids.

Two people were killed and about 10 others injured in a shooting at a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, nightclub early Sunday morning, police said.

The shooting happened just before 1:30 a.m. at the Taboo Nightclub and Lounge, the Cedar Rapids Police Department said in a statement. The club was hosting a 90s-themed party, according to a post on social media.
Cedar Rapids officers were on routine patrol downtown at the time of the shooting, the statement said, and were able to respond immediately.
Police have secured the scene and "there is no threat to public safety," the statement said.
Police did not release any information about possible suspects or arrests. The investigation remained ongoing Sunday morning and anyone "present at the time of the shooting or with knowledge of the incident" is asked to contact investigators, the statement said.
The injured are receiving medical care at multiple local hospitals.

Default One of two murder suspects arrested.

Timothy Ladell Rush, 32, is charged with second-degree murder, willful injury, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, reckless use of a firearm and possession of a firearm as a felon. No clear motive has been determined at this stage of the investigation, though Jerman said that police do not believe it was a “gang-related incident.” Police also said that there was no wider threat to the public at large despite the lack of arrests, calling it a “targeted incident.”https://www.kcrg.com/2022/04/12/ceda...club-shooting/

Two days before the night club shooting the Cedar Rapids Police Department said that multiple calls came for gunshots being fired in the Cherry Hill neighborhood. Officials said multiple shots hit an off-duty officer’s home, garage, and take-home squad car. “It was deliberate. It was an act of intimidation and we will not tolerate it,” police chief Jerman said, in a statement. https://www.kcrg.com/2022/04/09/ceda...geted-officer/

Default Nicole Owens

One of the victims, Nicole Owens, 35, mother of 3 children was shot dead. Our community is struggling to deal with at-risk youth and young adults in low-income neighborhoods and schools with police/city leaders/citizens/politicians educated in active engagement promoting trust and facing issues in these neighborhoods. Until that is done violence will continue to increase.

In the meantime there is also a growing population of homeless living in downtown Cedar Rapids alleys afraid of being the next target of this violence… white and black.

This isn't the Iowa I remember. I do take some solace that this is a national crisis and not something that's affecting Iowa or its immediate region. Thankfully the perpetrator was caught, but I don't think this is the last time we'll see an act of this magnitude in Iowa.

The unfortunate fact is that angry people and easy access to firearms is a recipe for disaster. It's not fair to those who own and operate firearms responsibly (i.e. hunters) but people that use firearms to further an act of violence give all who invoke their right to the 2nd Amendment a bad name.

In America, we've been passing new and stricter gun laws since June 26, 1934. Since records have been kept on gun violence, the amount of gun violence just keeps increasing. This says to me that gun laws haven't been and probably will never be a solution. Instead we need to focus on why we as a society feel the need to kill others as a solution to whatever problem we might be having. My vote would be to focus on the parents and parenting skills of now versus then.

Default Second arrest in the Taboo nightclub shooting

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - U.S. Marshals on Monday announced the arrest of a second suspect in connection to the shooting at the Taboo Nightclub on April 10.

In a press release, officials said Dimione Jamal Walker, 29, was arrested near Chicago on charges of first-degree murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, going armed with intent, and felon in possession of a firearm.

U.S. Marshals said they had information by April 12 that Walker had fled the state of Iowa. By April 14, they said they had information that Walker was likely in the greater Chicago area.

I'm inclined to agree. Gun violence is definitely a cultural issue rather than a legal one.

Firearms are glorified in TV, books, and film, and have been for a very long time. Gangster films, westerns, spy thrillers, sci-fi - you name it, there's going to be guns and a lot of them. They're also glorified in music (most notably in hip-hop, but it's not difficult to find gun references in pop, rock, country, etc) and social media.

It's getting to the point where the US is losing out on valuable tourism dollars because international tourists truly fear the gun violence problem we have here. Some countries (I want to say Japan, possibly others) issued travel warnings a couple of years ago advising caution if they plan to travel to the US. I don't know if they're still in effect but I believe that mass shooting in Vegas was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Default Witnesses too afraid to speak up

I hear about this time and time again in troubled neighborhoods in Cedar Rapids. People don’t trust the police or judicial system to protect them against retaliation.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Court documents say Dimione Walker, who is the second man arrested related to a fatal mass shooting in Cedar Rapids, has already faced years in prison multiple times in the past. The problem, according to Johnson County Attorney Janet Lyness (D), was finding people comfortable with testifying against him in court.

Documents show many charges against Walker were dismissed including charged assault, criminal mischief, and intimidation with a dangerous weapon over the course of several years.

Lyness said potential witnesses were uncooperative with law enforcement because people felt like they were putting themselves at risk. She said it made prosecuting people more difficult and frustrating.

“It’s extremely frustrating as a prosecutor to have people more afraid of a perpetrator than being willing to come forward and put them behind bars when they are extremely dangerous,” Lyness said …

That's what, Cedar Rapids' 6th homicide of the year?

Wasn't that long ago when the city could go a whole year and top out at 6th. We're not even at the halfway point of 2022 and CR could exceed 20, which was unfathomable just a few years ago.
