doesn't matter, they had mandatory evacuation orders for all low lying areas(basically the whole city). They had several days to get out and chose not to(or couldn't). Plus all levees in the area were rated to Cat 3 and everyone knew Katrina was going to be a Cat 4 or higher come landfall.

Why aren't all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons and asking for help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?
Why isn't the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn't solved the problem?
Where are all the FEMA trucks and trailers?
Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels in Chicago ?
When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines ?
Where is Sean Penn in his rescue boat and the Dixie Chicks?
Where are all the 24/7 lurid news tales of cannibalism and unnecessary drownings?
Why did Iowans evacuate so prematurely; why are they not holed up in deathtrap sports centers?
Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets?
When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a 'vanilla' Iowa , because that's the way God wants it?
Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people?
Why are the Iowans not complaining more and demanding to be saved?
How come in about 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again?

Uhh.. because we're Iowans. We don't wait for a handout. We just get to work and get it done. We don't have the luxury of a climate that is warm year round. in just a few months it will be fall and it will get cold. we need to get it done now. fields still need to be tended, celebrations need to be celebrated, life needs to go on. If we can't help ourselves how can we expect anyone else to help us. ANd because by the middle of july we will have gotten things cleaned up and plans in place. ANd neighbors help neighbors. That's the way of Iowa heck that's the way of the Midwest

I'm patting us on the back. This is 4 incidents. 4 incidents would've happened in one day on the quietest cul-de sac in New Orleans.

Hey, all, hate to say it, but it's not over yet!
The ground's so saturated, the severe thunderstorms we had roll through west-central Iowa did some damage!
Coon Rapids: the press box at the football field is now if pieces in the HS parking lot. Trees uprooted, limbs off, still assessing damage
Lanesboro: trees uprooted, etc. Our kitchen window faces the west, and we had water all over the kitchen! That's in addition to another inch of water in the storm cellar/mecahnical room (just dried out down there from about 6 inches of water)!
