I lived pretty much all of my adult life in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area and can tell you that the area has alot to offer. Unlike most of the country Omaha/Council Bluffs area is currently on an economic boom with numerous gov't projects in the works and numerous fortune 500 companies headquartered or having a large presence there! Last October I picked up and moved to Reno, nv to be closer to my family in Northern California (where I am originally from) and to put it in perspective, well we'll be moving back to the Omaha area soon.
With all the recent flooding i would not recommend the Ceder Rapids area or the DSM metro. Western Iowa won't flood like that cause the Missouri gets nowhere near flood level!
And even though Omaha isn't perfect it is probably one of the best, if not the best local economy in the nation at this time! With all the growth and expansion going on it is on track to become a mini-Chicago only with cheaper cost of living
hope this helps!

Is this the second time you've recommended someone move to Omaha instead? I agree with you Omaha is great, but so is Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, both have strong economies, they may have already considered Omaha and decided against it for some reason, so unless you want to contribute to the Idea of Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, as is the subject of this thread, don't post here about Omaha. Sure if its about Council Bluffs than thats entirely different.

WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM? They said they were originally from Harlan, IA so I suggested Omaha/ Council Bluffs area as it is close to Harlan...
And they said "Fill me in on what you think is so wonderful about Iowa" not just DSM or Ceder Rapids... Last time I checked Council Bluffs was in Iowa!
It's obvious that you have a grudge agaisnt me but you have no right to tell me what I can and cannot post as you are not a mod...

What you need to do is get off my dick and mind your own business...
I know I will probably get an infraction for the above comment but I really don't care because someone needs to put you in your place!

No I don't have grudge on you, but the OP said that they were considering Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, so you offer info for Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. I'm in my place, you're not. I'm sorry if I do seem to have a grudge on you though.

They did say they were considering Des Moines and Cedar Rapids I will give you that... But they also said: "Fill me in on what you think is so wonderful about Iowa" I took that as though the OP was wanting some info on anywhere in Iowa and since he/she said his/her fiance was from Harlan I figured the Omaha/ Council Bluffs area was a viable option... They never said that they ruled out the area!
Sorry if I came on a little strong with that rude comment but I felt as though you were attacking me when you told me not to post!

I am sorry for that, and I admit I do have a slight grudge on you (a lot of what you said about my city and state were kind of insulting) I'm trying to get past that though, and I'm sorry for infringing your rights to post about Council Bluffs.

The flooding along the Missouri between Sioux City and Omaha and points beyond would have been much worse this year if the six dams, four in South Dakota (Gavins Point Dam w/ Lewis and Clark Lake, Ft.Randall w/ Lake Francis Case, Big Bend Dam w/Lake Sharpe, and Oahe Dam with Lake Oahe), one in North Dakota (Garrison Dam w/ Lake Sakakawea), and one in Montana (Fort Peck Dam w/ Fort Peck Lake). These lakes carry a lot of water upstream. If these dams were not in place, given the wetness of this year and 2007, the flooding in the Missouri River valley would be severe and about as bad as the floods before the dams were built. During dry years, there is a tug of war for water between the downstream and upstream states (both have valid points, although I think that water should be used for necessities instead of recreational use).
Des Moines metro is a very nice metro and has plenty to offer. Most of the metro is clean and safe and it is an affordable place to live. West Des Moines is a shopping hub in the metro area, but there are other areas to shop. Most of the city is rolling hills and has a fair amount of trees. There are some nice old areas and some that have potential.
As for Cedar Rapids, I am not as familiar with the area. I have been by nearby Iowa City last year and found the area to be a very pretty one with the rolling hills and trees in harmony with open farmland in the countryside.
I agree with prior posts that both Des Moines and Cedar Rapids need our support right now along with other communities large and small affected by the recent wet weather in Iowa and other areas of the Midwest. I can understand to a certain degree, becasue there has been wet weather and flooding in spots in southeastern South Dakota (due to a snowy winter and wet spring). I am sure with the support and prayers, the two areas will recover and will be stronger and wiser as a result of their experiences.

I am from Iowa, living in Vegas, and moving to MO next month! Kind of funny...
Anyway, you would love either CR or DM...I am a Hawkeye so I'd lean more towards CR but DM is really nice too. You would be happy with either. Iowa is so much different than Vegas--you'll notice that right away.
Feel free to PM me if you think I'd be able to help.

I moved back to IA with my baby for the same reasons your thinking about moving. I lived in North Las Vegas few blocks from the Cannery. It's a move I've never regretted.

Isn't the cannery that had that 30 minute continuous propane tank explosions?
