realistically, with other large metros only a few hundred miles away, the lure of the big city and more diverse opportunities will always be there for the young person to explore, no matter what effort is made to entice businesses and jobs to the area. and with growth comes more strip malls, box stores, acres of parking lots, crime, taxes, bloated city government, and a general loss of the individual character of the city. smaller cities that concentrate on the tourist dollar, as well as keeping a family friendly tight knit community feel, have a pretty good game plan, in my opinion.
"a sleepy little tourist town full of charm" ... doesnt sound so bad to me.
