Can anyone give me the lowdown on Storm Lake, Iowa? The good? The bad?

Default Storm Lake, IA

I was raised in Storm Lake, Ia. Moved to Des Moines, now residing in TX (hoping to move back to Ia in a few years). My parents and brothers still live in Storm Lake.
I think it's a beautiful town. The lake is beautiful, they just built a nice waterpark. During the spring/summer, there's fishing, camping, boating, nice bike trail. As for nightlife, there's a few small pubs/bar and a small bowling alley but other than that, you kind of have to make due with what you have.
Shopping, well, there's no Macy's, sorry. Not a lot of options there either. You have the usual Super Wal-Mart Center, Hy-vee for groceries and Fairway(local chain).
Granted the neighborhoods are not the same. A lot of the homes have not been kept up. You can't leave your car and front door unlock anymore, but I think that's the same in any towns/cities nowadays.
If you any other questions, just let me know.

Thanks for the info! Since you are from there, are there many activities or entertainment for children? My husband is thinking about taking a job there, but we are pondering if it is a good fit for our family or not right now.. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have a job offer in Storm Lake, what is the rental market like? How is the phesant hunting in the area. My wife and I are looking forward to the move but we are concerned about housing before we commit.

I grew up not too far from Storm Lake.

Frankly, Storm Lake and other "packing plant towns" like it have changed a LOT in the last 30 years. Worthington, Minnesota would be a very similar town, as would Columbus and Fremont, NE.

The long and short of it is this: For whatever reasons, the packing plants have hired primarily Hispanics to work there. As a result, these towns that used to be 99.9% middle-class white, are now about 40+% Hispanic.

That has brought radical change to these communities. Some bad, some good. Either way, the communities are now different.

Stay as far away from storm lake as possible. Been here for twenty years and I hate this town and the people in it. They are closed minded, judgemental, scared of there own shadow, racist pompus ass holes. City gov. is bunch of money loathing incompetent arrogant pricks. Can not wait to get out of here some day.
