I currently live in Richmond, VA and am sick of the super hot and humid summers. Would Iowa be an alternative or doe it have bad summers too?

It can get pretty humid in Iowa in the summers, but not like Richmond. There are lots of days in July/August when the humidity is low, the temps in the 80s and the sky is bluer than you've ever seen on the east coast. On those days, it doesn't get any better!

We survived several Iowa City summers with no air conditioning. Perhpas 5 or 6 days were very uncomfotable (sweat when you are sitting still in the shade or trying to sleep at night), the others weren't bad.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be sticking to the Idaho/Arizona plan.

No humidity here in SW Montana. The humidity is the #1 thing I don't miss about about Iowa.

This is a fascinating topic. Where does the humid Midwest end and the arid West begin?

I think somewhere in western Nebraska, west of Kearney. I remember stopping in Kearney during a summer drive to Colorado and it was pretty humid, then I stopped later in Sterling, CO and it was a dry heat. What causes this change???

In the US, the dividing line lies roughly along the 100th parallel. It goes from about 1/2 way across the Dakotas, cuts across Nebraska east of North Platte, cuts off the panhandle of OK, runs along the east boundary of the TX panhandle, down through the middle of TX and hits Mexico right around Laredo.

Yes, they are very hot and humid. But it makes up for the cold winters, so I have no complaints. I guess Iowa is not the place for you.
