Good portions of the Southwest Side of Des Moines (around the airport) fit this description. It's a very nice and unpretentious neighborhood. Lots of older folks. Just ask for the Wakonda area when talking with your real estate professional. We're talking the area between say, Army Post south to Park Ave-ish North, SW 14th to the other side of Fleur. This is a good location for many reasons and drastically underrated, I believe.

As far as cost, I'd say 120,000-200,000 would get you in this neighborhood, maybe a little lower in some cases. The property taxes in the Wakonda area are supposed to be a little higher than everywhere else.

I'm not sure how your finances look, but if you can swing more than $200,000, you might like some of the homes a little further West past Fleur and just south of Bell/Indianola/Thomas Beck ave (Druid Hill, Casidy). There are some really cool homes in this area that seem to have a touch of 60's futuristic design. If I had the money, I'd totally be there.
