online Kaplan student
I live in northeast Nebraska but I am enrolled as an online Paralegal student at Kaplan University in Davenport, Iowa. I was wondering if anyone would like to tell me a little bit about Davenport or the Kaplan University campus. The online portal works great for me. I look forward to hearing from any responders and Thank You. Carla Cheyney

hey...davenport is a pretty nice town...i used to live there but unfortunately not anymore...theres about 350,000 people in the whole metro area(dport, bettendorf, rock island, moline)...theres not MUCH major crime...but there is a lot just like any big metro area...Rock Island and Moline Illinois are where the most crime happens in the QC...i was there for just over 2 weeks and there was a shooting over a dice game, but thats normal...im used to it, but it thats not something you like, i would stay in the corn fields

Davenport overall isnt that bad. As far as vrime goes, d port is in the top 20 in the nation every year fro violent crime, and we were number 2 one year right behind detroit. Its gotten a little better, but still lots of crime and gangs and drugs. Rock Island is pretty bad too. I dont know too much about Kaplan other than the fact its built on the side of a hy vee liquor store LOL. They have good job placement though.

I will stay in the cornfield, born and raised in Aledo, and yes Quad Cities has a lot of crime, just read the front page of the Quad City times newspaper. Say how are the Hayfield and McCoys doing in Davenport now, any more drive bys, or has it moved over to Rock Island?

Hi Kaplan U Student! I just graduated from there with an associate's degree in paralegal studies. How far are you into the program? Presently, I work for the Ohio Supreme Court, and compared to my co-workers, my knowledge leaves them in the dust. I am very pleased with my education from Kaplan. In fact, I'm returning in January for my criminal justice bachelor's degree. I have no idea what I'm going to do with it. I am, however, deeply interested in the correlation between crime and mental illness. Anyway, I'm just tickled to meet another student.

HI globetrotter!
I am just about to register into Kaplan Univ.Happy to hear from someone who already graduated and find a good job.I am going for the Bachelors in Science in Business/Accounting.I hope it will work out well, first I was a little worried , if I made the right decision, first going for online school, second going to Kaplan, but they seemed to have the right course for me, for what I was looking for, and are very helpful with anything.

I attended Kaplan University's campus in the early 90s (technically, it was not Kaplan then, but it still was their present location on Kimberly Road in Davenport.) It is not a large campus, which was something I enjoyed immensely. Maybe some people like the big university party-crazy atmosphere, but I was more focused on getting an education. You won't find Kaplan University to be a typical college setting in regards to the social structure (i.e. no frat houses or sports teams.) There wasn't any on-site housing, but maybe that has changed in the years since I graduated.
Davenport and the Quad City area is a nice place to live. It doesn't have a boisterous big-city atmosphere but it offers much in the way of entertainment. The I-wireless Center in Moline (the local arena) consistently draws huge names: Elton John played there last week, Blue Man Group played there last night, Hannah Montana (yuck, but sold out fast!) is tonight, and groups like Switchfoot and Evanescence will play shows next month. The Adler Theatre in Davenport draws some good acts as well...anywhere from Carlos Mencia to Broadway productions.
There is a brand new art museum in downtown Davenport that is really impressive. The Mississippi riverfront along Rock Island, Moline, and especially Davenport is very beautiful. If you like casinos, there are three of them in a four-mile area along the river. If you are into sports, the QCA has minor league baseball and hockey plus an arena football team. There's also a professional basketball team that will be starting up next year. The PGA makes a tour stop in the area during the summer as well.
The cost of living is very reasonable, mainly because there is not one big city with a bunch of suburbs...but four smaller towns each with their own unique style. Bettendorf is expensive, but Davenport, Moline, and Rock Island are very affordable places to live.
There are some drawbacks to the area, though I feel they pale in comparison to the positives. The local economy has been slowly recovering from the loss of manufacturing jobs during the 80s. There is work available, but the job market is lagging behind places like Cedar Rapids and Des Moines. Also, as in any area with 400,000 people, some parts of it have high crime rates. The area where Kaplan University is located is NOT near them, fortunately, so personal safety would not be an issue.
Hope this helps you in your decision. The Quad Cities would be happy to have you, should you decide to relocate!
