Default Another DM area post....please reply!

Hey y'all the secret is out! I know you guys are posting on here bashing the Des Moines area and Iowa in general just so people won't move there and ruin the great thing you have going out there! So....imagine if you will you were from SC and moving to the DM area...say maybe working in Urbandale. What should I expect?

In SC I like to fish, ride my bike, take the family to the parks, visit the mountains and beach, go camping etc. What is there to do outdoors in the corn fields and soy bean patches of Iowa?

Can I drink sweet tea and eat grits and country ham?

What is there cool to see in the areas nead DM for day or week-end trips?

Keep your fingers crossed....I hope things work out for me soon!
Craig

It is great to see 2 families from SC considering DM, we welcome you.

What to expect?
- a lot of bike trails
- short commutes (more time for your family or studying, etc.)
- As IA's capital city, most major events happen here:
- State Fair (very historic and fun for the kids)
- A top 5 Art Festival nationally
- A top 10 Farmer's Market (not all food, but entertainment, great atmosphere)
- Broadway plays at Civic Center
- AAA Baseball (one level below majors)
- AAA Hockey (one level below majors)
- AAA Basketball (one level...) (planning to start next year)
- Broadway plays
- Opera
- Concerts at Wells Fargo Arena
- Smaller concerts on riverfront amphitheater named for Simon Estes during summer (Robert Cray and other big names)
- ice skating at cool outdoor rink downtown
- symphony
- plenty of places to hunt and fish

Attractions: Agriculture outdoor museum (picked among the best museums in the country), amusement park, zoo, state historical museum, capitol building is a must see, new science center & IMAX, new downtown library, ethnic restaurants, art center, Saylorville Lake.

Within a few hours drive of: Kansas City, Twin Cities, Chicago, Omaha (great zoo)

Default to familyGuy

hey family guy,
Consider it done. I'll add you to my prayers. Would you do the same for me? I'm in the upstate. Really tired of the lousy schools and high crime. I feel really good about Iowa, but it's not for me to decide.

yes, I meant family oriented. Sorry about that...I guess I got you mixed up with DSMGuy.

I am considering relocation for work. I am a computer programmer. I used to be a software tester for embedded systems and I really want to get back to that. To make a long story LONGER, I've had initial contact with a company out in Iowa, and I am really praying that this works out. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to return to something I love with a really great company. I am hoping the phone call went well enough to get me out there in person. So, it may or may not work out, but I am soooo ready to get out of sparkle city!

Just wanted to wish you luck on getting the new job.
It would be nice if both yourself and family oriented could get together, and meet up in Des Moines, if you could do that I don't think you would feel to worried.
What is the chance for both of you taking a trip to Iowa to check out the place? It is so much more peaceful then the areas you talk about. Good luck, and I am here if you need me. Yorkie
