There are some very nice parts of Mason City as well but I doubt you will find a place to live in these nice areas for less than 275,000. Mason has a small community college and I have never met someone from Mason City high that didnt smoke weed. So, yeah, I would go with Clear Lake.
Clear Lake's more scenic, but I don't think the picture on Mason City is this bad. Interesting about the absurd rules homeowners face in Clear Lake. Reminds me of a town I lived in MN.

I've lived in MC in the past and also get back to Clear Lake often to visits relatives. I prefer a bit larger city, but both are nice places to live and will be what you make of them.

Default We'd love to have you in Mason City

The responses were very interesting. I had a college roommate from Visalia and brother that worked in Bellflower. You can find very nice 3-5 bedroom homes in Mason City for around 200,000 - 275,000. The bad neighborhoods aren't anything in comparison to a bad neighborhood in LA. North Iowa Christian School is located in Mason City and has a 95% 5 year classroom Iowa Test of Basic Skill Average - it is small, but growing - with a very warm family friendly atmosphere. Give a call to the school if you have more questions.

Mason City is very safe - You should have no worries there.

Atmosphere? I think “conservative” best describes the aura in Mason City. Change is always met with a great deal of cynicism and over analyzed to death in Mason City. I also suspect no city in Iowa has been harder hit by this recession than Mason City - many manufacturing companies have either laid-off or closed entirely.
Not to sound entirely down on Mason City - It does have some great positives. There is a large community college in town – so there are many other young people in town. It is a regional retail hub for a very large geographic area, so it does have many national retailers and restaurants. There is a good deal of cultural amenities for such a small town (nice museums, libraries, and the occasional theatrical production). It is also in close proximity (8 miles) to one of Iowa’s premier recreational lakes, Clear Lake

Of all the things you may have to worry about in living in Mason City, safety shouldn't top the list.

Clear Lake is a beautiful town that you should definitely explore if living in the area, but real estate is a little more expensive there.

Agree. I lived there for 4 1/2 years and "safety" was not a concern.

Finding an interesting nightlife? That might be a bigger issue.

Mason City has a long history of prostitution. Many now middle-aged men in town were brought up with wide-open prostitution, and many were also taken to the many whorehouses in town by their fathers, back in the 1970s and 1980s. As a result, many men in the area have strange ideas about women.
Prostitution is still there, but it's a little more discreet. It's still a haven for men who like that sort of thing, just no one talks about it.
There is a significant group of men in town, most of the what you would call "movers and shakers", business leaders, who engage in sex tourism, traveling to Thailand and Costa Rica for sex with what would be considered in this country to be underage girls and boys. They don't hide the fact they travel to these countries, but they think everyone believes they go for the "beautiful smiles" and "volcanoes". It's the wives and girlfriends who really suffer - the whispers and giggles behind their backs. If you move there, you'll hear about it soon enough.
So, aside from the whores, the men who love them, and the women who stay with the men who love the whores, it's not a bad place to raise a family.
