Well, since no one has responded, I'll throw in my .02.

Des Moines is a stronghold of the insurance industry, which, to the best of my knowledge, has stayed fairly stable (with the obvious exception of AIG). Principal Financial Group and Wells Fargo are two major employers in Des Moines. Principal has taken a hit, but Wells Fargo is still going strong. Des Moines did not have the major housing bubble which other areas had a few years ago, so property values have remained fairly strong. They may have dropped a little, but not to the extent of places like Phoenix, Vegas, and California. Sure there are some foreclosures around, but not too many. Overall, I would say that Des Moines is still going strong.

Sounds about what I've heard CrazyHorse. Some financial companies have taken a hit, while others, like Aviva, are growing quickly.

From this report, it sounds like a strong 2009 for DM.
