I'm not talking about teenage hoodrat graffiti..I'm talking about the "serious" gang problem that people are saying we have. It's simply not true.
I could walk thru the arsenal courts (or whatever they're called now) and I can walk down 6th st. in Dport in the middle of the night and the worse that would happen is I'd be offered crack.

Yeah, I can back it up. My friend and co-worker was at a local establishment that served food and beer, wine, mixed drinks. He had dinner, and a few drinks. Time in the establishment, about 3½ hours. Got in his car to drive the 3 miles to his home, police car pulled out from the adjacent entrance/exit of a neighboring establishment. Distance traveled until stopped, <200 yards! Reason for the stop, he forgot to turn on his headlights! They waited until he reached the street and then roared out of the next door entrance/exit and pulled him over. He was taken to the PD HQ where he was breathalizer tested and found at 0.09%, just .01 over the limit. He would have gotten home okay had he turned on his headlights before putting the car in gear and driving away. They would have had no reason to stop him. Witnesses (others that entered the establishment) claim that they all (all 5 of them!) saw the police car cruise the parking lot and then parked next door, approx 200 feet away. I thought it odd that the PD would stoop so low, so I grabbed my pocket video camera and set out to document it. Every evening for two weeks, I went to the same establishment armed with video camera and documented the PD cruise of the parking lot and several of the patrons as they left the bar & grill. Those that were there more than an hour and a half from the time the PD first cruised the parking lot were followed. One individual had a tail light out on his Toyota and was stopped within ½ block of the establishment. I video taped the incident up to the time they stopped his car. A later conversation with him revealed that they had him get out of the car while they "inspected" the interior. They asked if he had been drinking and he admitted he had two beers with his dinner. He passed a sobriety test and was warned to get the tail light repaired. Three nights later, I was stopped leaving the same establishment. I was there for nearly 4 hours doing my video recording as folks came and left. Had NOTHING to drink except diet cola and occasionally water. Had dinner there. Reason for the stop, I didn't come to a complete stop when leaving the parking lot! This at 11:00 PM on a weeknight. No traffic. I was warned about the stop and allowed to leave since there was no odor of alcohol in the vehicle and no apparent contraband in sight as they walked the vehicle with flashlight in hand.
Since then, many others have been similarly harassed. I continue to document. This may come in handy for someone's court case one day.

And you don't see this drug trafficking as a problem? Apparently you are not a "law abiding citizen" or you would have reported it.
So, what do you think the "hoodrat" graffiti will lead to? A career in house painting? Or maybe artistic decoration of the walls of the downtown buildings? Maybe a painting on display at the Figge?
Do you think these "kids" (or hoodrats, as you call them) dream this stuff up on their own? Unlikely. Someone is pumping them and getting them involved in the gangs. Otherwise, the problem would fix itself. No gang members, no gangs and no territorial graffiti.

You're right man, Davenport is a war zone..The police go on the news and deny that there is any drug/gang activity in the city (that's the link I was looking for)
Edit: What did hoodrat graffiti from the 80's and 90's lead to? umm....higher real estate prices and explosive growth in the downtown area.
Edit #2: We can't keep drugs out of our prisons, let alone our urban neighborhoods. The most the police can do is contain it to certain areas, but a realistic person would already understand this.

Appears to me that you live in an "unaffected" area and therefore, you feel unaffected. I'd like to know how old you are and what area of Davenport YOU live in!
As with any cancer or other infection, it rarely stays "confined" to a specific area. A cancer slowly grows until it pressures the area around it, which attracts your attention (i.e. pain, discomfort, swelling, etc.). When that occurs, it's stage 2, usually stage 3. Time to do something about it.
I don't know how you connect "hoodrat graffiti" to "higher real estate prices and explosive growth in the downtown area" but continue the delusion, if it works for you. Just realize that when the problem is confined long enough (no resources with which to grow, like a cancer or infection) it will move into other areas, possibly yours, if it is not already there.
Have a great life in denial.

I'm 33 and I spent years living on the corner of 6th and brown.(a place you'd be scared to drive thru) In a house that has since been turned into a half-way house. How old are you and where do you live that it's sooooo bad?

I have lived in Iowa for over 40 years. I prefer the small towns to the big cities cause everyone still waves and speaks. I have noticed more rudeness in the larger cities but nothing any different than any other state I have been in. If you move into a smaller community get involved with the community, church, school etc and you'll meet people alot faster and feel more comfortable being a part of your community. The community will warm up to you alot faster to if you put yourself out there with the rest of them.

Please forgive us horrible white people! God forbid you have to live in a city that's virtually crime free. I live in a diverse southern city and it's horrible!
