I know even small towns like West Liberty have hispanic enrollments at their elementary schools of over 55%. Des Moines has schools that are 90% minority. The number of blacks in the state has risen from 27,000 in 1980 to around 70,000 today, and is expected to be around 120,000 in 20 years. The state has 50,000 Asians, and is expected to increase to 96,000 within 20 years. Iowa also had around 45,000 hispanics in 1990, which has increased to 117,000 today, and is estimated to be around 306,000 within 20 years.
It's definitely changing, and not "lilly white" anymore. |

This is true, but relatively speaking Iowa is about as white as it gets. There's a few states that have us beat and a few Baltic, Scandanavian and Eastern European countries with a higher percentage of whites than we do. |
