Question Light Rail In Des Moines?

I don't know, but I'm guessing it's nowhere near as good as Des Moines Public Transportation.

YOu've got to be kidding me. To even consider a boondoggle like that in a town the size of Des Moines should get somebody fired.

Looks like it's still being considered, at least enough to keep AbsoluteDSM talking about it for over 3 years now.

There are some very baffling things about Des Moines, it might be a bigger mystery than the pyramids at Giza.

Lol, yeah, just like the pyramids.

If Omaha is considering it, it's definitely not out of the rhelm of something DSM may consider.

At the risk of this thread careening further off topic, I'll say that I think a streetcar system is a good idea for Des Moines.

Some reasons:

1. If it's good enough for St. Louis, Minneapolis and Omaha...there's no reason why Des Moines shouldn't look into a light rail system (albeit on a smaller scale, of course).

2. Streetcars worked for Des Moines once, there's no reason why they couldn't again.

3. Gas prices aren't going to stay this low forever and when they do shoot up, people are going to look to mass transit again.

4. It's exactly the kind of exciting, big, creative thinking endemic to progressive, growing cities. The kind of "big dreaming" that some cities in Iowa sorely lack.

Add Kenosha, Wisconsin or Little Rock, AR to your list. Some of the smallest cities with successful streetcar lines. Little Rock is considering a second expansion since opening a little over four years ago (and adding a second phase 2 years ago).
