Default I'm amazed Perry doesn't have a Wal-Mart by now...

I've been driving through Perry since birth (well my parents for the first 16 lol) and I've seen that it is almost nine thousand people.

Yes I realize that Perry has an Alco and Pamida, and is only twenty to thirty minutes away from Des Moines...but Wal-Mart has opened in much smaller communities (case in point: Manchester, Osceola, Tipton...cities all under 5,000).

Someday I know I will see the "OPENING SOON -- Walmart" sign along Highway 141. There used to be two Dollar Generals open at the same time at one point in the early 2000s, and where that so called Perry "Events Center" used to be Place's (which was taken over by Pamida in 1999.) Perry is a decent town...but I do think it is nicer than Denison...Denison was just built on a bad part of land (weird hills and a forest), but I can say that it is almost an exact twin (Denison actually has more to offer amazingly)...but to my point...with all the diversity in Perry and lots of land to build on, you think Wal-Mart will ever set foot in Perry? My reactions would be torn if one did come to Perry...)

Just would like your opinion on what you think...

Nate

Harlan doesn't have a Wal-Mart either, and it is about 5,500 people. They were supposed to get one in the late 90s, but the town fought it and Wal-Mart withdrew. Today, Harlan has a pretty vibrant downtown because of this.

Hmmm... I figure a lot of people in the Perry area commute to the Des Moines area anyways for work, so they're a little less secluded in that manner than Manchester, Osceola, Tipton (I think?)

Why screw up a nice small town with a Wal-Mart? Sure, all the local small business owners COULD enjoy stocking shelves at a Wal-Mart instead, but the local pride in ownership would be lost (unless your pride in ownership comes from what uniquely-cute button you can pin on your blue vest).

Why would you want one? Every small town I've ever lived in that got a WalMart immediately had a spike in crime and a drop in independent businesses!
