I am from Minnesota and I dont really understand why we are so PC these days. Why in the heck would Iowa need to "promote" itself?! If people want to come to Iowa, let them come, if not, too bad!!! I was in Newton a few months ago for the Indy Race and out of 30000 people, I did not see any Blacks or Hispanics there. For "minorities" moving to Iowa, I am sorry to inform you, but this is a "hick" state, rooted in agriculture, therefore, that is pretty much what being an Iowan is all about. Nascar, country music, pick up trucks, etc. If you dont sympathize with this culture or you are not willing to make any effort to assimilate into "Iowan culture", then obviously you will always be an outcast. I dont understand how Blacks, Hispanics move to a country town in the middle of Iowa, make no effort to integrate and complain about racism, maybe you are in the wrong state?

Unbelievable. I am from the southside of chicago and I have never been in trouble with the law. I am trying hard to better myself for my sons so they dont end up like some people who don't want good for themselves. My oldest son moved to Iowa and became a victim of a crime that was brought on by racism. His apartment hallway had horrible words written on the walls and booboo on the walls. He wants to stay in school there and I am considering moving there. Why should I let racism keep him from achieving his goal of succeeding in life? And all my sons are very well mannered! I have seen some white people not be able to even control there children as well as blacks. Everything does not have to be a color issue. Thats racism!!!!!

No, I don't think I want to edit my last comment however I can elaborate on it a bit. "Not that bad" for them. Sucks for us taxpayers. I don't think what they are doing is right however I would do the same given the lack of opportunity in Mexico or elsewhere. Something obviously has to be changed and with the Mex/American free trade agreement Bush has allowed to go forward........is a GIANT step back.

I know what you mean but that was funny. I grew up in Iowa and never found the Idea of assimilating into it's culture very appealing. I think Nascar, Country Music and big loud redneck trucks to be kind of a turn off. That's just me though.

There are always going to be jerks anywhere you go. (And don't forget that a lot of hate crimes are actually comitted by non-whites vs. other non-whites etc.) A small group of ignorant people will always exist and will find whatever reason to hassle someone else over thier race, sexual orientation, socio-economic class, religion.....so just avoid these types and get on with your life.
I have relatives in Iowa and basically the state has had trouble with large city gangs establishing "franchises" in towns in Iowa. This has made people a bit suspicious of people moving in from large cities like Chicago. Keep this in mind that it will just take some time for people to get to know you.

That's quite alright, Lafitte.
But if you disavow RC Cola and Moon Pies, we'll have to ask you to leave.

Iowa Culture - NASCAR, country music, pick up trucks, etc.??? Hick state rooted in agriculture???
Please, please tell us how you arrived at your obviously well researched generalization of an entire state?
Perhaps it is akin to me basing my enitre opinion of Minnesota on my one visit to Robbinsdale, MN. Would it be fair to say that the entire state of Minnesota is poorly educated, dirt poor, and barely employed in the food service, roofing, or landscaping industries?
