I grew up in Iowa and the overwhelming sense that I have of the people here is that "you get what you give". You will be given a chance in Iowa, but you gain a reputation quickly. If you treat people respectfully, they will respect you and vice versa. Even people in small towns here are relatively worldly in my experience. They WANT to live in small towns and are offended by "hick" assumptions. Iowa does have an insecurity problem because of this. So they will be touchy if you talk down to them. My father is a perfect example. He has a Chemistry degree with honors and reads the paper daily. Looking at him you would think "hick". But he WANTS to be a farmer and he provided a good life for us growing up. I lived in Austin, TX for 4 years getting my Masters and have come back to the DM area (and brought my bf with me, he loves it too). Austin is definitely interesting and "hip", but I honestly prefer Iowa and its people.
P.S. This is a personal preference, but I'll take an Iowa winter over a Texas summer any day.
