If you are set on Sioux City area, look into Sergeant Bluff. Housing is pretty cheap, even for acreages. School system is excellent (it is where I went to middle and high school). Crime is essentially nonexistent in Sergeant Bluff. It is also a little closer to Omaha than Le Mars or Hinton if you need any real big city stuff, whatever that may be.

I am origanally from Sioux City and visit all my family there quite often so In my opinion Sioux City is not as bad as people make it out to be. Yes there are parts of town that are bad but some that are very nice. You dont want to move to morningside though that is a bad part of town. My brothers currently go to Hunt school as well as was I did growing up, its a good school. I believe that my aunt and uncle live in singing hills and it is a beautiful part of town and right by the grocery store and walmart. Hope this helps.

Default Thank you

Thank you all very much. He was passed over for the job, as they ended up hiring someone from within.

Any advice before we take the leap and move to Sioux City?
Have you considered a career in the meat packing industry? It is the main thing Sioux City has going for it. No need for you to look up the addresses of the local packing plants in case you want to inquire there. You will be able to smell them as you reach the south side of Sioux City on the I-29.

Default wine country

Be prepared to freeze in the winter, it will get much colder than california. Not sure why California gets so much negativity these days, we went there on vacation earlier this year, (Napa, Frisco, and Big Sur) and it was one of the coolest places ever. We also met people that seemed very friendly. There were some not so friendly ones, but no worse or different than here in Wisconsin. Some areas have higher crime, but no different than parts of the midwest really. We also loved the wine thing, something we have in Door County, but not to the scale that they have in Napa. Not knocking Iowa by any means, I might be moving there soon because of a job (Dubuque, which actually sounds like a nicer place than I thought it would be), but I don't think I could leave the ocean, mediterranean climate and mountains for the midwest if I lived there. There are some places that I would definitely stay from if I ever lived out there though.
