Default Can you tell me what Council Bluffs is like now as apposed to 1974-78?

I used to live in the Council Bluffs area in 1974-78. I currently live in Southern California and want to move back to Council Bluffs, mainly because I'm tired of the overcrowded conditions of too many illegal immigrants here. I remember Council Bluffs as predominately white and English speaking. Are there illegal immigrants there also?

hmmmm....is there any way to tell? Yes, we still have a hispanic population. Are they illegal? I don't know...I've never asked to see their green card!? I will tell you that Council Bluffs is still a nice place to live. I graduated in 1972. If you've not been back since 1978 then you will be surprised at the changes! The old Bayliss Park fountain has been removed & we just opened the brand new fountain...it is a beauty and quite unique! I'm taking my son down there tomorrow to take a few pics of him before graduation. I'll post some pics of the park on here too so everyone can see them. Anyway, come back & check us out...we're still here, and it's still a nice place to live. Just a reminder though: the weather here isn't ANYTHING like California!

Since they removed the old Bayliss fountain, is the park still there, complete with the black squirrels and the nice big trees? We used to hang out there and play frisbee. I graduated in 1971. My son and I plan to move out there as soon as I get the house up for sale. Still doing last minute painting and repairs first. What a job!

Oh yeah, the weather out here in Southern California is HOT today...in the 100's. I'm looking forward the a bit milder climate. And I know what the winters are in Council Bluffs but I don't mind.

I think Council Bluffs is a fairly nice place overall now. They have casino hotels in Council Bluffs. All and all, for a city of around 60,000 people I think its a fairly nice place and the quality of living there seems to be similar to Omaha.

In fact quite a few Omahans have moved there because of the lower property taxes.

The east side of Council Bluffs is very clean, hilly and pleasent but the western area espeically around Broadway (which I believe turns into Dodge in Omaha) is a bit run-down in my opinion but not that bad at all.

They do have some areas of Council Bluffs that could certainly be improved upon and some of the homes there could use a coat of paint in the area thats close to Omaha. But overall, it seems like a decent place a typical B-grade small city.

I had also live at Lake Manawa for a short time. I noticed they are building more homes over there from looking online at real estate. Is Lake Manawa still a nice place?

Lake Manawa is still good

Council Bluffs also has

the Mid-America Center

Famous Dave's and Ruby Tuesday and USA Steak Buffett and other restaurants and hotels,

the second-largest number of theaters in the Star Cinema (theater) chain and Bass Pro Shops and 3 casinos

BTW:

if you are in Council Bluffs dont say out-loud the words

Council-tucky

the folks in CB are very sensitive when it comes to that word

Exclamation See my pics of the New Bayliss Park Fountain!

I wonder if you have moved to Council Bluffs yet??? The new Bayliss Park Fountain was "unveiled" in May. It is a bit different, but a VERY pleasant place to go, and yes, they were able to preserve nearly all of the big, beautiful, old trees! They are having concerts & movies in the park a couple of times a week all summer (take your lawn chair & enjoy!). There is also a kids fountain for them to play in so (hopefully) they stay out of the main fountain . There are also huge black squirrel statues for the kids to play on. There is a lot of seating throughout the park so one can enjoy it from just about anywhere there. I put a couple of pics of the fountain here on City-Data on the CB home page. Take a look ...and yes, the REAL black squirrels still play in the park!

I like Omaha/Council Bluffs.

The area has grown quite a bit from when you were there as well:

1970's Metro: 550,000
Today Metro: 850,000
