Oh Lord!! We are moving to Dubuque, Iowa!
I am really nervous. I am a georgia girl and we are moving to Dubuque Iowa. This is what I need to know. How bad is the weather?? How much snow do you really get at one time? We get a couple inches and the town shuts down. It is too late now...but will a Georgia girl survive a winter in Iowa???
I also was wanting to find out about the schools in Dubuque. One of the houses we might be renting is in the Bryant elementary school. Is this a good school. It has high ratings.
Thanks for any info!!!

Oh Lord, a Georgia peach is falling into the snow ! Were getting a hard freeze tonight and everything is going to turn brown and die, and soon it will be very cold every single day. Your gonna love it because NE Iowa always gets more snow than most other parts of the state. You want to get yourself a long heavy coat with hat and gloves so you can get outside everyday and take it all in. You won't want to skip a day getting out to explore, if your lucky you might have some evergreen trees in your neighborhood, as they stay green and might remind you of home until they get all covered up with snow. Seems like last year they had a foot or so of snow fall in one storm. You'll get used to it if you put some effort into getting used to it.
I don't know much about the schools in Dubuque, other than they should be about 10% more efficient than they were last year.

Bryant is a blue ribbon school and I've heard it is quite good. Here's a link that may help.

We have gotten up to 12-15 inches over a couple days several times in the past few years. Snow is always fun.
As far as Bryant, I would rank it as one of the best in the district.

I think a lot of people down south have this sterotype that it snows ALL THE TIME up north.
While you'll get snowstorms, on an average year (of course nothing is every average, always more or less) you'll get 1-2 snowstorms of up to 10 or 12 inches. Most of the time it snows it just ends up being a few inches and things get cleaned off and it's not really a big deal. Anything 6 inches or less and people are able to just deal with it as it happens.
The past two years we've seen a lot more snow than usual, but then the few years before that we got almost no snow the entire winters.
It's just something you'll have to get use to - but don't worry that the entire winter is going to be taken up worrying about snow.

I don't live there but been to Dubuque a lot over the years(girlfiend), one of the nicest small/medium size cities in the USA.
You're lucky.

It snowed today in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. Just for an hour or so, no accumulation. There might be something to that stereotype after all...

Ok....but the average high is still near 70 degrees. Temps vary wildly in the Midwest, but it's not like snow in the first half of October is ever a normal happening.
Regardless - GO HAWKEYES!

Dubuque is a great midwest town to move to.
There is always a few bad days of snow but nothing you wont be able to handle as long as you get a nice winter coat and some mittens youll be fine! With all the hills in this town theres always skiing and sledding for winter.
Bryant is a GREAT school and the area is a good end of town. I live on bryant street aabout 5 blocks from bryant school and its a good central location for town. You can get anywhere in 10minutes or less. I believe bryant and irving are higher rated schools. but Bryant, Irving, Kenedy,Eisenhower, Rosevelt are all good schools.
