Default Hawke Court in Iowa City

Has anyone ever lived in these student/family apartments? We are considering them for myself, partner and young child. Are they close to shops, daycare, or a park?

I've never lived there, but I drive the bus out there all the time, so I'm familiar with the area.

They're alright, I suppose. Pretty basic accomodations, I think. (Think "dorm".) Mostly international students and their families. Highly diverse. Some of the older folks out there might not approve of you and your partner, but I don't think you'd get much more than some head shakes and "tut, tuts". Lots of kids in the area.

Is it close to:

Shops: Not really. There's a 24 hr. Walgreen's down the street that should take care of any basic needs. Grocery and restaurants are a little farther away, maybe a short drive.

Daycare: Not really, you'd need to drive into Iowa City or Coralville for that.

Park: Yes. The whole area is in the middle of a big University park, lots of trails, woods, open space, soccer fields, etc. The complex has some small playgrounds on it. For a pool or a big playground, you'd probably want to go to Coralville or Iowa City.

The good news is that the University does a very good job of getting buses out there all day and late into the night. They can get a little crowded at peak times and in the winter, but overall, very good coverage. The University also does a good job of patroling their property with the UI police--it's very safe.

Hope that helps!

I lived in Hawkey Courts in Summer 2004 through Spring of 2005 and I do not believe you will have any trouble or receive any stares regarding your lifestyle. I will say this about the apartments they are very basic and atleast when I lived there they were not that nice on the inside (But atleast you will have W/D Hookups, even if the dryer hookups will be in your bedroom and your washer hookups will be in the kitchen/living room area). I had to move two times while I resided there. I had black mold in my apartment. I actually had black mold in my second apartment also. So be vigilant if you intend on staying there. Public transportation for the University Apartments are excellent. Buses come into the area very frequently and are more convenient than driving on campus (You don't have to worry about parking). Parking is very challenging in the campus area. Either you will have to walk a long distance or worry about paying for parking; whether parking ramp or by meter which can get expensive. Trust Me!

Don't move there if you can help it. No it really isn't near anything it stuck in the middle of nowhere. The playgrounds are getting crappy and the apartments are no more than Glorified dorms rooms. The management isn't the greatest there is no real communal feeling and everyone seems to keep to themselves unless you are ALWAYS home. The windows are only on one side in Hawkeye drive and you are not guaranteed a place at court. they are smaller and usually fill up with single people. I lived there to long, ohh and it's outdated.
