I've never lived there, but I drive the bus out there all the time, so I'm familiar with the area.
They're alright, I suppose. Pretty basic accomodations, I think. (Think "dorm".) Mostly international students and their families. Highly diverse. Some of the older folks out there might not approve of you and your partner, but I don't think you'd get much more than some head shakes and "tut, tuts". Lots of kids in the area.
Is it close to:
Shops: Not really. There's a 24 hr. Walgreen's down the street that should take care of any basic needs. Grocery and restaurants are a little farther away, maybe a short drive.
Daycare: Not really, you'd need to drive into Iowa City or Coralville for that.
Park: Yes. The whole area is in the middle of a big University park, lots of trails, woods, open space, soccer fields, etc. The complex has some small playgrounds on it. For a pool or a big playground, you'd probably want to go to Coralville or Iowa City.
The good news is that the University does a very good job of getting buses out there all day and late into the night. They can get a little crowded at peak times and in the winter, but overall, very good coverage. The University also does a good job of patroling their property with the UI police--it's very safe.
Hope that helps!
