Help! We are relocating to Dubuque!
We are moving to Dubuque from the Chicagoland area and I have so many questions about housing and schools. Senior, Hempstead, Wahlert???? We are leaving excellent schools and would like to choose wisely. East side or West side? I haven't heard favorable opinions about the north side though. Why not? Love South Grandview Road, around Bryant Elementary and the Country Club, how is that area for housing? Are there many children in that area? We have all ages from diapers to driving in our family. We would love an area where children play outside safely and the neighborhood was very friendly. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. One more question...why so many ranches on the west side? Thanks!

Thanks! I loved Atlanta! We were there for a short time, lived outside the perimeter in West Cobb. Great city, really great people! Good luck to you in Dubuque.

Hi Chicagogirl, We moved here from Berwyn (if you are familiar with Svengoolie you will know Berwyn) 12 years ago and I love, love, love Dubuque! Of course I miss a good hot dog, italian beef and Chicago Style pizza, and really miss the radio stations....but to me it's worth it.
If your looking for a grade school I think Bryant is the best. Its a great school and my kids love going there.
There is a web site www.greatschools.com that can give you ratings on each school, testing, etc.
Hempstead got an 8, while Senior received a 5. I haven't heard too many good things about Wahlert, but I'm sure others might think it's a good school.
I love the houses along South Grandview and the surrounding area. We live in a ranch but I would rather live in an older house.
Many of the homes in the west side were built in the 60's and ranches were popular during that time. Maybe someone who knows better can give a better answer on that one.
I'm partial to the older homes in dowtown Dubuque. They are exquisite and some are in desperate need to be bought and restored. You will find Dubuque has good and bad points....to me mostly good

Umm I am from Chicago and unless you lived in Naperville all those school districts were horrible.
You wont have overcrowded classes with spanish speaking kids here in Dubuque holding your kids back. So any school here is probably way better than Chitcagos crappy schools.

Wow! Dubuquenewbie, you must really hate Chicago. I am sorry to hear that. I guess I was lucky to have grown up in a great suburb and my kids go to fantastic (english speaking) schools. Naperville is very good, (kick our butts at sports often enough). My children have relocated before, so this is not new to them, but I still worry about making the right choice in schools. Does anyone have anything to say about the north side (Sageville Elementary). We like a few homes on the north side but have heard there is a bit of a stigma to that side of Dubuque. Still considering Holy Family Schools though. Any input would be great! Also, Dubuquegal, I know, last time I left Chicago I missed the pizza and radio stations sooooo much!!! It was great to have them back for a while. And it is always hard to find good Chinese and Mexican restaurants! You really take that for granted out here. BTW, Dubuquenewbie, Atlanta has great restaurants and interesting people. Everyone I met was from somewhere else! I guess it just depends on who you meet. Good luck Original786!

I've taught in DBQ for 28 years' the public and private schools are both good. I teach at Dbq Senior, which some locals will give a bad rap because they've had a higher % of free/reduced lunch students, but any student who wants to get a good education at Senior will get a great one. We also have some very good Mexican and a a couple of decent Chinese restaurants, but I'm afraid that there's not much ethnic diversity in dining.

It's not my fault you guys can't stay on the topic - Dubuque, not Chicago. If you want to talk about Chicago, go to the Chicago forum. If you want to talk about illegal immigrants, go to the subforum in politics for illegal immigration. Calling the moderator a fascist or giving an ultimatum that if a post is deleted then this site "isn't worth a damn" doesn't give you a free pass.
So back to Dubuque....
