depending on time of the year. There is the train ride up in Boone just a short drive away thru the river valley. Living History Farms is kind of cool. That is if you are not from a farm. Some of the older people like to go there to remember the old days of farming. The church there is what some call historic. It is where the Pope visited close to 30 years ago.
There is the Science Center with IMAX in Downtown Des Moines, there is the I-Cubs baseball next to the Science Center. If you like older things and somewhat Iowa unique that is the Iowa Historical Musemun at the foot of the State Capital Building towards downtown. THere are the covered bridges just south of the city. These are the bridges in the Book and Movie "Bridges of Madison County". If you are coming in from the West on I-80 about 50 miles or so on Hwy 25 south of the Interstate a 1 and half miles is " Iowa Freedom Rock " Google Freedom Rock and you find out about this.
