My job will be relocating to Mason City, IA. My Family and I are considering a move to Garner, IA. Any PROS/CONS I need to consider before I move there? How are the Schools? What daycare is available? I don't mind the commute, but I need some help finding a home to rent until we feel comfortable enough to buy. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

I lived in Mason City for several years in the late 90's. I was a decent small city. Why not just live there and forget the commute?

Garner is a great choice. It is one of the very few small towns that have been growing in North Central Iowa. Pretty much any school district in Iowa is outstanding, and Garner is no exception to that. I think what sets Garner apart from many of its neighboring communities is the relatively strong local economy and the towns commitment to building quality of life enhancing facilities - For instance, the town has a new aquatic center and a brand new community center that is fantastic (it offers work out equipment and gymnasium space for the town’s residents). It has a quaint little main street with many shops and also has your typical small town grocery store and a variety store.

If you have school aged children, it is definitely worth your time to look into the communities in Worth County (Northwood, Manly). Every student who graduates high school there gets a scholarship to apply towards their college education. It’s not a huge scholarship, maybe $3000 or so, but certainly better than nothing.

Thanks for the insight Pepe! The reason for the move and Garner is because I am going through divorce. My ex is from the area and wants to be closer to her Family. I refuse to be an every other weekend Father so I am moving as well. I am from small town IA and grew up on a farm, so I don't think moving from Des Moines to a small town will be too much of a shock. I still love to farm and hope to pick up a part time job helping a local farmer. BTW, anyone know of any good websites or local contacts that will help me find a house to rent and/or part time jobs in the area? Thanks for your help!!

Garner grads are also elligable for a scholership. Garner is really a nice little town and will definitely be a good place to live~ of course I'm prejudiced because I was born in that town and graduated from that high school

Can't tell you what is for rent because I no longer live there but most of my family does~ if you pm me I will send you some local contacts
