Try to get a farmer to stand liable for your garden because of the crop spray, and lets say on the odd chance he does give you $20 back for your garden seed, your garden is still just as gone.

Iowa
I have lived in Iowa all of my life, so I am definately biased. We are not as cold as Minnesota. I have a sister-in-law who lives in the Minneapolis area there.
We can have cold winters, usually January being the coldest month with winds. We can have ice, but not like Missouri where the temperatures area always close to freezing so you get the ice. The last 5 years have been very mild -- very little shoveling or bad roads to contend with. Because we do have bad weather in Iowa, the highway/interstates do a really good job at cleaning the roads off and Iowa drivers are careful, for the most part.
We have beautiful fall and springs. A lot of fall colors this time of year, especially in northern Iowa. Summers are usualy in the 80s with some 90 weather. This past summer was the hottest it had been in years with upper 90's alot.
If you want rolling hills, a lot of farmland, safe place for children, quiet place to raise a family, etc. this is an excellent place to be.
My husband has lived all over the US and says Iowa is home and Iowa is where he wants to stay. Low crime, low smog and nice people.

I cannot resist!
Showing you these pictures. The "mild" winter reported by avjens may well have been true in her area, but the weather here can vary wildly across the state. Here are some pictures of our deck in March of 2004

Moviing to Iowa
I moved to Iowa(Davenport) 13yrs ago from Cleveland, and I love raising my kids here, the weather isn't the greatest, the humidity is terrible in the summer, but I believe all midwest states have that problem! The school are good and there is always something to do.

I have lived in Iowa for 15 years now. From Mpls area in Minnesota all my life before. First 4 years was central Iowa...gee what a mistake. town was a culture shock. no intelligents, no culture all truckers. Then got a job in Decorah....NE Iowa. What a diffrence!! Culture, bit colder..but warmer than MN. No misquito's True about any small town..if you havn't been born here, you will always be an outsider, but you have to join the community to at least try in any small town. And that is most of Iowa. It can be boring and you do have to plan ahead to see about traveling the different towns for their events. Cities are spread out for shopping..so if you live in Decorah, a half way desent mall is either in Waterloo, Rochester MN, or LaCrosse WI. all about an hour away. If you live in a town that has a college like Ames or Decorah, there is always some event going on, so you have to raly look for things to do. People go to bed by 10 p.m. and the stores in your towns close by 5 and they usualy wait at the door by 4:45 to make sure you know it is time to get out. People are nice and helpful to oustiders, and you have to have a good attitude to make it work.
