So you don't think it's a good thing that someone in a city like Des Moines can be in the Twin Cities, Chicago, KC, etc within a handful of hours and have access to the things those cities require? That's probably one of my favorite things about living here.

Denver is still about an eight hour drive from Omaha, correct? Eight hours from Des Moines can get you to quite a few places...

Well I'm not saying that necessarily, I guess it depends if you rather drive or fly. I would just assume fly because it can be cheaper than driving and much faster....I also hate driving. I'm speaking of Epply's ticket pricing of course I'm not sure how it compares with DSM.

Default Cedar Rapids actually has more traffic than the Quad Cities

Cedar Rapids had over 1 million passengers compared to the Quad Cities with a little over 913,000.

This thread is like watching two parents at a Little League game argue whose six-year-old is the better ballplayer. Does anybody (but the parents) really give a rat's #&@!?!?

It's no wonder people from New York and California regard Midwesterners as a bunch of hicks.

You seem to participate in these sort of pissing contests enough to make it seem like you care.

I'm sure if you made a poll of why some people from NY or CA think Midwesterners are hicks, the Des Moines vs. Omaha thread at City-Data.com would come up towards the bottom of the list of reasons. Besides, those places have enough problems of their own to view their opinions as the standard we should live up to.

The above comment was my first on that thread, so I'm not really much into the Omaha-Des Moines pissing contest. There's not much one can add to a dialogue that has included counting 'Cheesecake Factories' as the defining hallmark of urban living.

I will defend the other cities in Iowa (Cedar Rapids, Quad Cities, et al) that have constantly been marginalized by overzealous Des Moines boosters who seem to believe everybody else in the state is irrelevant. Cheesecake Factories or not, there is more than just one place in Iowa that has some culture.

I've been over to the Illinois forum quite often. Yet, I've not seen any active threads where the topics are "Peoria vs. Rockford" or "Peoria vs. Quad Cities". There certainly is some degree of economic rivalry between those three locations, but nobody has parlayed that into some inane pissing contest like the Omaha vs. Des Moines thread.

what a funny example. all of the cities in Illinois live in the shadows of chicago anyways, go look at other states, and you will find them everywhere and stop boring people with your complaints that the place you live has the image of being "hickville" ...

if you're old enough, then you can move, if you won't move, then don't complain.

1) I don't really need your permission/approval to do/not do anything. This is a forum where people are allowed to post opinions. If my opinion ruffles your feathers, that's your problem...not mine.

2) You hit on something regarding Illinois. People in that state generally don't engage in idiotic pissing contests between mid-sized cities, because there's a little more awareness of what actually comprises a "big city". If Des Moines or Omaha were both located in Illinois, I guarantee you some the inane comparisons that have been made on this particular thread, would never be entertained in an Illinois forum.
