So much depends on where you are moving from and what can you deal with as a "small town." Minneapolis/St. Paul is about as small as I can deal with right now - and it's not that I am out and about that much, but I like having the options. If however MSP seems like a larger metropolitan area - and it could be depending on your frame of reference - then Ames may fit the bill. From the other posts they seem comparable in nearby features it really depends on the size of the metro you want to live in.
