Davenport has a placed called Handicapped Development Center that is always hiring. On Hickory Grove Rd and on Brady St, H. Grove is where you fill out the apps....Camp at West Lake and cruise into work.

Some years there is snow on the ground on Dec. 1st, some years the grass is green on Christmas. It can get down into the 30's in Oct. tho'.

Thanks for the lead. I'll check it out.

I'm thinking of coming out in September. The 30's don't scare me...I'll just bundle up. It's when it gets to be in the teens at night is when I get cold if camping outside.

Just when does it start getting "bad"? As stated, I could camp out for a bit until I find a job/apartment but obviously I'll want to be inside when the worst of the winter hits.

So far Davenport seems to be on top of the list.

Any thoughts on Sioux City? I ask because I like the size of the town and I think of it as a little more "western" than "eastern". More of the culture I'm used to.

Although I haven't lived in Sioux City, I can tell you that those I know who have lived there talk of how much its gone downhill. It is very much a meatpacking town with a growing hispanic population.

There really isn't any "western" or "eastern" culture in Iowa - we're all midwesterners and Iowans. Plus, if you are used to Seattle, you are used to larger cities and the eastern part of the state definitely has more larger cities and therefore, more opportunites, culture, etc. If you do yearn for the big cities every once in a while, Chicago (downtown) is about a 3 hour drive from Davenport, St. Louis is about 4 hours, Minneapolis is about 5 hours, as is Omaha and Kansas City.

Last fall, we had about 1 inch of snow on October 10 as I was getting ready for Iowa-Michigan football game. It didn't last, but it was a harsh reminder of what winters can really be like here. Today, it's hot and humid, headed for 90 degress and "air you can wear" humidity. Being from Seattle, you probably won't be ready for this extreme either. You take a shower but never really dry off! This is also unusual for this time of year - more like mid-July, but after the winters we've had and the unusually cool summer last year, everyone here is ready for it.

That doesn't make sense.

I assume the OP doesn't want to live amoungst the sprawl. That doesnt' mean he/she may not want to live in a place where sprawl might exist within the metropolitian area...they just don't want to live in those areas. For that matter, what healthy metro doesn't have sprawl?

If you live in centralized Des Moines proper (for the most part), you're not living within urban sprawl.

Another take. Who wants to move to a place that has zero sprawl? I suppose it is possible if you didn't need a job or have any use for a local economy that was growing.
