MQ801: Thanks for the links. I tried to rep you, but couldn't. I try to be fair, but when confronted with the Borg-like pronouncements of many of the Muslims on this site, it isn't easy.

I don't think that Islam has degrees. It is a black or white religion. You are or you aren't. They shun the moderate "modern" mindset as strongly as they shun the extremist mindset.

Define "extremist mindset". Are you saying they aren't moderates, but neither are they extremists? Do you think they tacitly (or expressly) support extremism?

Many Christians and Jews are able to see the good and the bad in their religions. Because all religions ought to be striving to over come what is not good. But in order to do that we have to be honest with ourselves.

I am honestly curious....
Apparently not here on CD....

How do they earn their keep, then? Do they work fulltime jobs?

Anyone out there know?

that is true but like the jews you only become a moderate when you actively resist the extremists.
that is not happening in the muslim community.

There are other moderate religions, it is not just the Jews. Christians moved from extreme to moderate.

I agree. I do know a number of Muslims through business who don't act like that, but I've seen the kind on here (and had the frustrating types of conversations) that you are referring to. Every religion seems to have its fundamentalist zombies, the kind with whom you cannot conduct a logical, rational conversation.

I imagine as with many things the more reasonable Muslims might often have better things to do with their time than to come here and discuss religion. The people who are most active on Internet forums, as I recall, tend to be people with lots of times on their hands or who are a tad obsessive. Unmarried or unemployed men under 35 I think also tend to be overrepresented, but maybe not so much here.

Obsessive or bored men without a wife or girlfriend are kind of a prime target for extremism or cults. They've got no one at home to tell them "isn't this crazy?" or "calm down." They also may feel a lack of purpose or connection in their life. Or I'm just making this up as I go along, but I think some of it is based in some kind of profile.
