With any people there was always someone there before. The history of the world is one of migrations of people. Either forced or voluntary.

Europe has a history of migrations, the Americas has a history of migrations, the Middle East has a history of migrations.
From Arabia where Islam first was born and from there conquest and conversion of those conquered.
Make no mistake Muslims certainly did let Christians and Jews life safely but as 2nd class citizens. And that changed during the time of Maimonides:

Islam protected Christians in Andalusia; they never persecuted them, despite this, Spaniards eliminated Islam and Muslims from Andalusia through massacres that were inspired by fanatic spirits.
