My questions would be: What does mainstream Islamic doctrine teach about other religions, tolerance and peaceful coexistence or?

Why are the Sunni and Shiia so intolerant of each other? Are they divided greatly by religious differences or is it mainly political and based on some historical wrong doing?

Sunnis and Shiites differ on the historical and religious emphasis placed on Mohammad's cousin, Ali, and Ali's son, Hussain. The sects differ on their views on Ali's role as a leader of the Muslim faith after Mohammad. Sorry, that's about all I know.

Does the Qur'an speak of "beating a wife, lightly" if she is disobedient?

Thak you, to an outsider's eyes it seems like such a large anount of trouble caused by such little reason.

I apologize in advance for all the misspelling Iím about to do

Muslimís are supposed to be direct decedents from Abraham via Ishmael.
Is that correct?

In the bible God commands Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as a test of his faithfulness. (God later spares Isaac, and Abraham sacrifices an animal instead.) I know the Quraní has this same story. However, I believe the Quran never mentions which son Abraham is going to sacrifice to God. Is that correct? Do Muslimís believe that the son was Ishmael instead of Isaac? If so why?

This is something I'm not too sure of myself either. But it is based on interpretation. "Beat lightly" is said to mean with something like a thin blade of grass - never to inflict pain and injury on your wife. It's also for continuous disobedience in grave matters, not like changing the TV channel while you're watching.

The Quran describes the events, and so we believe the prophet Abraham was told to sacrifice Ishmael, as a test of his faithfulness. We also believe that God replaced Ishmael with an animal. One of our holidays commemorates Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his own son, and so all over the world Muslims sacrifice animals on Eid-ul-Adha.
