I've heard this same story as an example of a good Christian man. I guess it's flexible.

No religion is necessary to tell the tale.

There is no beauty in islam.

And that story can be replicated all around the globe with every single culture, religion and lack of religion. It's called love.

I think it is actually rather touching, but I don't see what it has to do specifically with Islam. I used to go visit my grandmother in a nursing home after she had had a series of strokes, and she often thought I was her son (my father). She always looked somewhat disappointed upon my telling her who I was. A very sad situation.
