Islam is a deen who's aim is to control everything through Islam. You do know that in some Islamic nations gays are executed, women are suppressed, and they have horrible penalties for even minor crimes, don't you?
That would be one country called Saudi Arabia, it's the country you Americans have no problem getting your oil from. Saudi is a staunch monarchy that likes to disguise itself as a Islamic nation. It's not, but it's interesting to see how easily people fall for it. There is a verse in the Quran that says: "there is no compulsion in religion" think about it.

Your unsupported optimism is in spite of the absolute lack of evidence of any desire or interest in doing so within the dominant Islamic cultures, right?

They are familiar with their backwards CULTure that gets mistaken for religion.

Islam isn't 400 years behind Christianity, but rather some Arab, African and Far Eastern cultures are behind western conceptions of human rights and democratic principles.

Religion isn't compatible with a modern society in general.

First of all I am a fellow Canadian, and Saudi is a monarchy, but it's laws are based on Sharia, and is considered a pure Islamic nation....
Here is a list of Islamic nations... http://www.worldlii.org/catalog/52815.html (broken link)

What was the evidence that 15th century Christianity had the slightest chance of being anything other than grossly barbaric?

No . . . but you must have been dreaming if you think the Muslim Brotherhood is evidence of such desire or interest.

Well, there is is historical evidence that it doesn't have to be the way it is. Just like any other religion, it has a lot of internal variety. Right now the politically and socially ascendant groups are not the progressive ones. That can change. I don't have a lot of love for any form of religion, but it seems to me that if and when Islam is dominated by people who think like Woodrow it will be a big step forward for Islam.
