In Islam, do muslims address Allah by a salutation or directly by his name?

Thank you for the list, and these are salutations (titles) of respect to the position. I'm also asking if the actual name is used.

FYI - Allah is not a name. Its a contraction of "al" and "ilah" which basically translates to "the diety/g_d".

Default Allah and Elohim the same?

Moderator cut: Per TOS: English only. Please include English translation[SIZE=2] This may help. This is how Sura 1:1 is translated into Hebrew. So it may be that Allah gets translated into Hebrew as Elohim. I copied this from HaKoran by Dr. Uri Rubin. Unfortunately I am not adept at Hebrew to do any more than this. But I think this is a very important verse in Islam.

Hebrew as Elohim
Elohim is diety. So in Arabic it would be Allaahumma. Still not the name of G-d.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) said,
"Allah has ninety-nine names, one-hundred less one;
and he who memorized them all by heart will enter Paradise.
" To count something means to know it by heart.

**************************
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) heard a man saying
O Allah, I ask Thee, I bear witness that there is no god but Thou,
the One, He to Whom men repair,
Who has not begotten, and has not been begotten,
and to Whom no one is equal,

and The Prophet said:
You have supplicated Allah using His greatest Name,
when asked with this name He gives,
and when supplicated by this name he answers.

********************

And He is Allah, there is no god but He!
All praise is due to Him in this (life) and the hereafter,
and His is the judgment, and to Him you shall be brought back. The Noble Quran.

these two names i mentioned them in the list and here they are

AL-HAYY The Ever-Living
AL-QAYYÛM The Self-Existing by Whom all subsist

and they were mentioned in the Quran in many verses and here is one

Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme (in glory).

and here is another translation for the same verse

Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), Al-Hayyul-Qayyum (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists). Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. [This Verse 2:255 is called Ayat-ul-Kursi ]

AL-HAYY means
The Living, The Alive, The Everlasting, The Deathless, The Ever-Living.

AL-QAYYÛM means
The Self-Subsisting, The Self-Existing One upon Whom all others depend

Then this follows the same lines as in Judaism as "I am that I am", then we cannot say his actual name and you use the 99 salutations as to respect his position/status above us. Correct?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) said,
"Allah has ninety-nine names.

he said names and not salutations

and when we read the Quran way start by saying
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

and in the Quran you can read the word names in these verses and the Lord is Allah

And Allah's are the best names, therefore call on Him thereby, and leave alone those who violate the sanctity of His names; they shall be recompensed for what they did.

***************************
Say: Call upon Allah or call upon, the Beneficent Allah; whichever you call upon, He has the best names; and do not utter your prayer with a very raised voice nor be silent with regard to it, and seek a way between these.
************************
Allah-- there is no god but He; His are the very best names.
*******************
He is Allah the Creator, the Maker, the Fashioner; His are the most excellent names; whatever is in the heavens and the earth declares His glory; and He is the Mighty, the Wise.

***********************************
Lo! those who say: Our Lord is Allah, and afterward are upright, the angels descend upon them, saying: Fear not nor grieve, but hear good tidings of the paradise which ye are promised.

AL-QAYYÛM is one of Allah beautiful name
and means Self-Existing by Whom all subsist

and the name Allah is also in the Bible

in Aramaic, the language Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) spoke the word for God is Allah or Allaha.
as you can see in these two clips.
