TAFSIR

COMMENTARY

Keep in mind all Tafsir and Commentaries are the opinion of the authors. Always be certain to question them and learn why the author has that particular opinion. It is your own responsibility to find reason to agree with or disagree with them. We do not have the option to say we are misled, we alone carry the burden of justifying what we believe and the opinion of others is simply a tool to use as we learn.

TRANSLATION

BismillahirRahmanirRahim
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
86. At-Tariq

086.001
YUSUFALI: By the Sky and the Night-Visitant (therein);-
PICKTHAL: By the heaven and the Morning Star
SHAKIR: I swear by the heaven and the comer by night;

086.002
YUSUFALI: And what will explain to thee what the Night-Visitant is?-
PICKTHAL: – Ah, what will tell thee what the Morning Star is!
SHAKIR: And what will make you know what the comer by night is?

086.003
YUSUFALI: (It is) the Star of piercing brightness;-
PICKTHAL: – The piercing Star!
SHAKIR: The star of piercing brightness;

086.004
YUSUFALI: There is no soul but has a protector over it.
PICKTHAL: No human soul but hath a guardian over it.
SHAKIR: There is not a soul but over it is a keeper.

086.005
YUSUFALI: Now let man but think from what he is created!
PICKTHAL: So let man consider from what he is created.
SHAKIR: So let man consider of what he is created:

086.006
YUSUFALI: He is created from a drop emitted-
PICKTHAL: He is created from a gushing fluid
SHAKIR: He is created of water pouring forth,

086.007
YUSUFALI: Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:
PICKTHAL: That issued from between the loins and ribs.
SHAKIR: Coming from between the back and the ribs.

086.008
YUSUFALI: Surely (Allah) is able to bring him back (to life)!
PICKTHAL: Lo! He verily is Able to return him (unto life)
SHAKIR: Most surely He is able to return him (to life).

086.009
YUSUFALI: The Day that (all) things secret will be tested,
PICKTHAL: On the day when hidden thoughts shall be searched out.
SHAKIR: On the day when hidden things shall be made manifest,

086.010
YUSUFALI: (Man) will have no power, and no helper.
PICKTHAL: Then will he have no might nor any helper.
SHAKIR: He shall have neither strength nor helper.

086.011
YUSUFALI: By the Firmament which returns (in its round),
PICKTHAL: By the heaven which giveth the returning rain,
SHAKIR: I swear by the raingiving heavens,

086.012
YUSUFALI: And by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of vegetation),-
PICKTHAL: And the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants)
SHAKIR: And the earth splitting (with plants);

086.013
YUSUFALI: Behold this is the Word that distinguishes (Good from Evil):
PICKTHAL: Lo! this (Qur’an) is a conclusive word,
SHAKIR: Most surely it is a decisive word,

086.014
YUSUFALI: It is not a thing for amusement.
PICKTHAL: It is no pleasantry.
SHAKIR: And it is no joke.

086.015
YUSUFALI: As for them, they are but plotting a scheme,
PICKTHAL: Lo! they plot a plot (against thee, O Muhammad)
SHAKIR: Surely they will make a scheme,

086.016
YUSUFALI: And I am planning a scheme.
PICKTHAL: And I plot a plot (against them).
SHAKIR: And I (too) will make a scheme.

086.017
YUSUFALI: Therefore grant a delay to the Unbelievers: Give respite to them gently (for awhile).
PICKTHAL: So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while.
SHAKIR: So grant the unbelievers a respite: let them alone for a while

TRANSLATION

BismillahirRahmanirRahim
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
87. Al-A’la

087.001
YUSUFALI: Glorify the name of thy Guardian-Lord Most High,
PICKTHAL: Praise the name of thy Lord the Most High,
SHAKIR: Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,

087.002
YUSUFALI: Who hath created, and further, given order and proportion;
PICKTHAL: Who createth, then disposeth;
SHAKIR: Who creates, then makes complete,

087.003
YUSUFALI: Who hath ordained laws. And granted guidance;
PICKTHAL: Who measureth, then guideth;
SHAKIR: And Who makes (things) according to a measure, then guides (them to their goal),

087.004
YUSUFALI: And Who bringeth out the (green and luscious) pasture,
PICKTHAL: Who bringeth forth the pasturage,
SHAKIR: And Who brings forth herbage,

087.005
YUSUFALI: And then doth make it (but) swarthy stubble.
PICKTHAL: Then turneth it to russet stubble.
SHAKIR: Then makes it dried up, dust-colored.

087.006
YUSUFALI: By degrees shall We teach thee to declare (the Message), so thou shalt not forget,
PICKTHAL: We shall make thee read (O Muhammad) so that thou shalt not forget
SHAKIR: We will make you recite so you shall not forget,

087.007
YUSUFALI: Except as Allah wills: For He knoweth what is manifest and what is hidden.
PICKTHAL: Save that which Allah willeth. Lo! He knoweth the disclosed and that which still is hidden;
SHAKIR: Except what Allah pleases, surely He knows the manifest, and what is hidden.

087.008
YUSUFALI: And We will make it easy for thee (to follow) the simple (Path).
PICKTHAL: And We shall ease thy way unto the state of ease.
SHAKIR: And We will make your way smooth to a state of ease.

087.009
YUSUFALI: Therefore give admonition in case the admonition profits (the hearer).
PICKTHAL: Therefor remind (men), for of use is the reminder.
SHAKIR: Therefore do remind, surely reminding does profit.

087.010
YUSUFALI: The admonition will be received by those who fear (Allah):
PICKTHAL: He will heed who feareth,
SHAKIR: He who fears will mind,

087.011
YUSUFALI: But it will be avoided by those most unfortunate ones,
PICKTHAL: But the most hapless will flout it,
SHAKIR: And the most unfortunate one will avoid it,

087.012
YUSUFALI: Who will enter the Great Fire,
PICKTHAL: He who will be flung to the great Fire
SHAKIR: Who shall enter the great fire;

087.013
YUSUFALI: In which they will then neither die nor live.
PICKTHAL: Wherein he will neither die nor live.
SHAKIR: Then therein he shall neither live nor die.

087.014
YUSUFALI: But those will prosper who purify themselves,
PICKTHAL: He is successful who groweth,
SHAKIR: He indeed shall be successful who purifies himself,

087.015
YUSUFALI: And glorify the name of their Guardian-Lord, and (lift their hearts) in prayer.
PICKTHAL: And remembereth the name of his Lord, so prayeth,
SHAKIR: And magnifies the name of his Lord and prays.

087.016
YUSUFALI: Day (behold), ye prefer the life of this world;
PICKTHAL: But ye prefer the life of the world
SHAKIR: Nay! you prefer the life of this world,

087.017
YUSUFALI: But the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
PICKTHAL: Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting.
SHAKIR: While the hereafter is better and more lasting.

087.018
YUSUFALI: And this is in the Books of the earliest (Revelation),-
PICKTHAL: Lo! This is in the former scrolls.
SHAKIR: Most surely this is in the earlier scriptures,

087.019
YUSUFALI: The Books of Abraham and Moses.
PICKTHAL: The Books of Abraham and Moses.
SHAKIR: The scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa.
