Islam is a religion of unity and brotherhood. Islam encourages its followers to live in peace and harmony with each other and be as caring and considerate with each other as possible. Therefore, besides simply preaching brotherhood, Islam has made the act of loving and caring for each other sacred, and one gets religious benefits for staying with peace and love with each other. The hadith of Prophet (PBUH) in this regard is:

“Indeed whenever a believer meets another believer takes his hand and shakes it, sins fall from both of them the same way leaves fall off a tree.” (At-Tabrani)

From this hadith, it is evident that a Muslim needs to shake hands with fellow Muslim. Besides being a gesture of brotherhood, the act also helps the participants shed their sins. So a Muslim who indulges in Mod cut: Link deleted. for the purpose of gaining blessings from Allah Almighty, must also shake hands in order to shed their sins.

What does it say about shaking hands with non muslims?

BTW...I tend to hug. My muslim friends found it odd to start with but they know me well enough by now.

First you must understand that particular Hadith and why it relates specifically to Muslims. Basically we are obligated to shake hands with Muslims of the same gender. Stop and think, if all of us did follow that hadith as we should there would be no sectarianism. The Islamic Ummah would be truly one unified family. Apparently not all of us follow that Hadith.

Now as for shaking hands with non-Muslims it is not forbidden. We are permitted to shake hands with non-Muslims of the same gender, but we are not obligated to do so. In shaking hands with a non-Muslim, we are not identifying them them as being Muslim.
