I'd say that the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of half of Cyprus is pretty recent. And more recently than that you have ISIS.

I see that idiot in the Sydney siege was a Shia convert to Sunni - no doubt someone will suggest he wasn't a real Muslim, but 'the other'. The 'religion of peace', yet again.

The guy in Sydney was either a Criminal, Insane or both.

This may have been a case of suicide by cop. It seems he was fixing to be convicted for murdering his wife. He may have wanted to get killed.

Quote:
(Newser) – As Australia mourns two hostages killed in a Sydney cafe yesterday, many are wondering what gunman Man Haron Monis was doing on the streets in the first place. The Iranian-born cleric, who was killed when police commandos stormed the cafe, was on bail for around 50 counts of sexual and indecent assault and for charges of being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife. The 31-year-old mother of two was stabbed repeatedly and set on fire with the use of lighter fluid last April, allegedly by Monis' girlfriend. The crime happened in an apartment stairwell. More:

Monis, who declared himself to be a sheikh and a "spiritual healer," was seen as a "fringe figure" in Sydney's Islamic community, according to a Guardian profile. Shia Muslim leaders had asked police to probe his claims to be a leading cleric and last week, he announced on his website that he had converted to Sunni Islam and pledged allegiance to ISIS.

The lawyer who represented Monis in the murder case tells the Australian Broadcasting Company that his client, who came to the country as a refugee in 1996, may have thought he had "nothing to lose," hence "participating in something as desperate and outrageous as this." He says that while in prison, Monis suffered some "very unpleasant events, involving matters of excrement over himself and his cell," and he is certain that the siege was the act of a "one-off random individual," not an organized terrorist group.

Cyprus is not exactly a "Recent Conquest" more of a push to seperate into North and South Cyprus with the North being Muslim and the South being Christian.
Although the island became part of the Byzantine Empire in the fourth century, it was part of the Ottoman Empire from 1571 to 1878

The Spanish Conquest by the Moors was probably the last conquest of a Nation by Muslims. Even then the population remained predominatly Christian.

The Stories of Islam spreading by the sword do not seem to hold up.

Yes, but again we have violence 'in the name of Islam', and what of the horrendous massacre of the school in Peshawar by the Taliban? I suppose you're going to say that the Taliban are not real Muslims?

The Taliban are Muslim. There are no "True" or "False" Muslims all who believe they are Muslim and have said the Shahadah with sincerity are Muslim.

but we are individuals and not mindless puppets. No Muslim or even group represents Islam, we each act on our own and we each are to be held accountable for our sins and crimes.

Being a Muslim does not make a person infallible, we each have free will and we do have those that do evil deeds among us. but, that is from their own choosing, not because of Islam

The 9 men that committed this atrocity did so for non-Islamic Reasons

"We selected the army's school for the attack because the government is targeting our families and females," said a Taliban spokesman, as per Sky News. "We want them to feel our pain."

Does killing Muslims sound Islamic to you?

All they will earn for that effort is Hell fire. I do not know of any Islamic teaching that condones suicide for any reason.
