Considering the secrecy ordered within the religion, orders coming from muhammed himself, to keep the information from the Kaffir, it is unlikely the general population knew much about it.
Two of the most important books were not even translated into English until the 50s and 60s.
The world knew what Islam wanted them to know, with exceptions of course, but the exception is far from the rule.

this is still evident today when the apologists will lie, and misquote verses to the unknowing west.

even Thomas Jefferson is credited with knowledge of Islam, however, as I said, 2 major books were not available to him, and his Qur'an was the first English translation, not an accredited one.
And you cannot learn much about islam, by reading the Qur'an alone.
