He had considerable training and the people that trained him did a fantastic job he responds to both hand and voice commands and will only respond to commands given by my wife.
So glad to hear this and I'm glad things are getting better.

Like I said in another post, I wish I was a member here in 2010 or at least talked to you back then. You would have been a big help, but you're a very big help now.

In Islam always verify everything any person tells you. we all can only give opinions and our reasons.
The bottom line is each person is responsible for what they believe.
A Suggestion I give to new Reverts is to study the 4 madhabs as a start to learning what is required clearly and clearly forbidden.

For things that are not clear, seek the opinions of every scholar you make contact with.

Hi,

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I couldn't find much else on the topic and you seem quite knowledgable. I hope your wife is doing well and that Chase is still serving you well.

I understand that some scholars agree that service dogs are okay to keep in the house but does this apply to mental disabilities too? My sister suffers from severe anxiety and panic attack disorder - she has been offered a service dog which would help her greatly but we're unclear on the facts in Islam about it.

Would really appreciate your insight on this. Many thanks in advance.

Please see this and some of the subsequent posts in that thread for an update. He has not yet left, at least as of a couple of weeks ago.

Isn't the black dog a devil according to the sunnah? Why are you having them?

No.
Sunnah has never said that the black dog is a devil.

Yes it does.

Abu Dharr reported:
The Messenger of 'Allah (ﷺ) said: When any one of you stands for prayer and there is a thing before him equal to the back of the saddle that covers him and in case there is not before him (a thing) equal to the back of the saddle, his prayer would be cut off by (passing of an) ass, woman, and black Dog. I said: O Abu Dharr, what feature is there in a black dog which distinguish it from the red dog and the yellow dog? He said: O, son of my brother, I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as you are asking me, and he said: The black dog is a devil.
Sahih Muslim 510 a The Book of Prayers

Abu Talha reported:
I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Angels do not enter the house in which there is a dog or a statue.
Reference : Sahih Muslim 2106 b The Book of Clothes and Adornment

That is not "sunnah" but "hadith".
This "hadith" was not written during the lifetime of the Messenger. It is not approved by either Allah or the messenger.

Another nonsense!

There have been deaths in houses where there were black dogs. Angels are not afraid of black dogs or the devil.

So the angel of death won't enter the house in which there is a dog. Can I live forever by having a dog in my house?

Next time, a Muslim, who believes this hadith, has heart attack, don't take him to a hospital but into a house with dog; he won't die there as the angel of death won't enter that house.

Dear Khalif,

These are from Sahih Muslim. 90% of Muslims are Sunnis & as a Sunni you don't remain one if you reject the Sahih SItta. You may believe in whatever you wish if you are in the secular West. Where I live, you will be detained if you publicly voice such opinions. Btw, I'm not a Muslim nor do I believe in any religion (though I believe in God) but I have plenty of Sunni relatives & I know Islam well. rgds
