Muslims often claim Islam is the Final Revelation and Muhammad is last Prophet.
Where in the Quran are the evidence [clear cut verses] to support to the above claims?

33:40 come within the following context [Pickthall];

3:37. And when thou saidst unto him on whom Allah hathconferred favour and thou hast conferred favour: Keep thy wife to thyself, andFear Allah. And thou didst hide in thy mind that which Allah was to bring tolight, and thou didst Fear mankind whereas Allah had a better right that thoushouldst Fear Him. So when Zeyd had performed the necessary formality (ofdivorce) from her, We gave her unto thee in marriage, so that (henceforth)there may be no sin for Believers in respect of wives of their adopted sons,when the latter have performed the necessary formality (of release) from them.The commandment of Allah must be fulfilled.

3:38. There is no reproach for the Prophet in that which Allahmaketh his due. That was Allah's way with those who passed away of old and thecommandment of Allah is certain destiny.

3:39. Who delivered the messages of Allah and feared Him, andfeared none save Allah. Allah keepeth good account.
3:40. Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but heis the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the Prophets; and Allah is Aware ofall things.

Within the above context, I do not read 'seal' as 'last' but rather that is an attempt to confirm Muhammad's status as an authentic following all previous prophets.

This is more like an affirmation of Muhammad's status to his other wives so that he has the credibility to marry his son's wife.
The argument is this was a Just-in-time surah that Muhammad raised himself to justify his marriage to his wives and since it is a command from God [actually Muhammad himself], he has to fulfill that command.

In the early Meccan stages Muhammad was declaring himself to be a warner (40 verses) supporting this.
In addition, Allah declare the reminder via Muhammad in Arabic was merely to a specific nation, implying there will be other prophets for other nations in future in somewhere else where necessary.

Since Allah claimed the Quran is simple to read and understand he should have stated something like 'this is the last revelation and Muhammad is the last warner, messenger or prophet.

Note there are other alternative views of 'seal', i.e.
What was Muhammad's Seal of Prophethood?

Not exactly but it is used in a similar sense. Note the following context and sense;

- to affix a seal to in authorization, testimony, etc.
- to grant under one's seal or authority
Seal | Define Seal at Dictionary.com

"seal (or stamp) of approval"
phrase of approval
1. an official statement or indication that something is accepted or regarded favorably.

In that context, the term "seal" in 33:40 is to reinforce Muhammad's credibility amongst all the previous prophets and he relied upon it to abuse his authority to 'steal' his son's wife in broad daylight and shut up his other wives and anyone who complained about such an immoral act.

If Muhammad is to be proclaimed to be the last messenger Allah should have asserted explicitly instead of making indirect implications in the midst of Muhammad taking over his son's in law wife [a rather weird move].

In the earlier Meccan phase of the Quran, Muhammad was proclaimed as ONLY as a 'Warner' [41 verses] and not a warder [2 verses] and was responsible to be a conveyor [19 verses] and bring good tidings [20 verses]. This is very explicit and direct as compared to only ONE word 'seal.'

The weightage of the above thus weighs heavily to Muhammad being a 'warner' and not the last messenger.

Those who interpret 33:40 as implying 'last prophet' have low self-esteem and are insecure and that is very natural with most theists.
