Slavery is always wrong, no matter who does it. And it is not right to try to point to another wrong to excuse or draw attention away from the wrong that is the topic of discussion. I will add that Islam was and is responsible for the vast percentage of slavery that has and is taking place on earth.

Muhammed is the PROPHET of Islam as appointed by Allah. Of all people, Muhammed should not be setting the example of owning and trading and selling humans. Why didn't Allah stop this?

And indeed Islam led the world in slave trade, and still does. Muslims enslaved black Africans well before any slave ships sailed for America. And the cruelty at the hands of Muslims is heartbreaking. Children slaughtered at birth, women were raped, men castrated, hard labor, many deaths. Today slavery continues in Afghanistan (girls and boys are trafficked into neighboring countries) Egypt (second place in trading women), Indonesia (child trafficking), Mauritania (about 1 in 5 people are slaves), Pakistan (children as young as 5 years old are working), Saudi Arabia (children sold to rich men as sex slaves), Sudan (hundreds of thousands of blacks, mostly women and children, were captured, transported to the North and enslaved) and Yemen.

And there is this: I can say that slavery is evil and any man who owns, sells and trades slaves is doing evil. No matter who they are. No matter when they did it. Muhammed owned, traded and sold slaves. Can you say that Muhammed was evil for doing such a thing AND setting an example for a grim future of slavery?

Slavery is opposed in the Qur'an and all Muslims were encouraged to release all slaves

Islam and the Qur'an are not commands they are more like examples of the consequences of our acts. The Qur'an does emphasis the good for not having slaves.

It is not righteousness that you turn your faces toward East or West; but it is righteousness . . . to spend of your substance . . . for the ransom of slaves. (2:177)

Never should a Believer kill a Believer; but (if it so happens) by mistake, (compensation is due): if one (so) kills a Believer, it is ordained that he should free a believing slave, and pay compensation to the deceased's family . . . For those who find this beyond their means, (is prescribed) a fast for two months running: by way of repentance to Allah. (4:92)

Allah will not call you to account for what is futile in your oaths, but will call you to account for your deliberate oaths: for expiation, feed ten indigent persons . . . or clothe them; or give a slave his freedom. If that is beyond your means, fast for three days. (5:89)

Alms are for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds); . . . for those in bondage and in debt . . . (9:60)

But for those who divorce their wives . . . then wish to go back on the words they uttered, - (it is ordained that such a one) should free a slave before they touch each other: this you are admonished to perform . . . And if any has not (the wherewithal), he should fast for two months consecutively before they touch each other. But if any is unable to do so, he should feed sixty indigent ones. (58:3-4)

Verily We have created Man into toil and struggle. . . . And what will explain to you the path that is steep? - (It is freeing the bondman . . . (90:4-13)

A good study on this topic

"Never should a Believer kill a Believer; but (if it so happens) by mistake, (compensation is due): if one (so) kills a Believer, it is ordained that he should free a believing slave, and pay compensation to the deceased's family . . . For those who find this beyond their means, (is prescribed) a fast for two months running: by way of repentance to Allah." (4:92)

This says that if you kill another Muslim then as punishment you have to release ONE (not all) of your slaves. And it should be a believing slave, so Muslims can own Muslims as slaves.

"Allah will not call you to account for what is futile in your oaths, but will call you to account for your deliberate oaths: for expiation, feed ten indigent persons . . . or clothe them; or give a slave his freedom. If that is beyond your means, fast for three days." (5:89)

This is interesting. Again, a slave is to be released only as punishment. And you can pick from alternative punishments and keep all your slaves if you need every one of them.

"Alms are for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds); . . . for those in bondage and in debt . . ." (9:60)

?? This is in itself a form of slavery. Money earned by Muslims is taken away by force to redistribute. This is not a statement against slavery.

"But for those who divorce their wives . . . then wish to go back on the words they uttered, - (it is ordained that such a one) should free a slave before they touch each other: this you are admonished to perform . . . And if any has not (the wherewithal), he should fast for two months consecutively before they touch each other. But if any is unable to do so, he should feed sixty indigent ones." (58:3-4)

Again, the releasing of ONE slave is done as a punishment, and you can pick from alternative punishments if you need ALL your slaves.

Let's look at some more verses from the Quran: (BOLD is my explanation)

"Slavery is opposed in the Qur'an and all Muslims were encouraged to release all slaves"

The Quran says this:

2:221 And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe. And a believing slave woman is better than a polytheist, even though she might please you. And do not marry polytheistic men [to your women] until they believe. And a believing slave is better than a polytheist, even though he might please you. Those invite [you] to the Fire....

4:3 And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses (slave girls/women you have captured). That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice].

4:24 And [also prohibited to you are all] married women except those your right hands possess (slaves/women you have captured)

4:36 Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess.

24:31 And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess (slaves),

24:32 And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves.

24:33 But let them who find not [the means for] marriage abstain [from sexual relations] until Allah enriches them from His bounty. And those who seek a contract [for eventual emancipation] from among whom your right hands possess - then make a contract with them if you know there is within them goodness and give them from the wealth of Allah which He has given you. And do not compel your slave girls to prostitution......

(This at least says that if a slave wants to be free eventually, then if the slave is good then free them. I would bet that slave had to be a believing slave. And do not force girls into prostitution. However Allah gave permission for Muslims to rape captive women, so I'm guessing with non-believing women anything goes.)

Some of the Companions of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) were reluctant to have intercourse with the female captives in the presence of their husbands who were unbelievers. So Allah, the Exalted, sent down the Qur’anic verse: (Sura 4:24) "And all married women (are forbidden) unto you save those (captives) whom your right hands possess." (Abu Dawud 2150, also Muslim 3433)

24:58 O you who believe! Let your legal slaves and slave-girls, and those among you who have not come to the age of puberty ask your permission (before they come to your presence) on three occasions;...

33:50 O Prophet, indeed We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their due compensation and those your right hand possesses from what Allah has returned to you [of captives] whom Allah has given to you

(Here is an example of Allah handing out captive women as booty. The Muslims raped them and then sold or enslaved them.)

33:52 It is not lawful for you (to marry other) women after this, nor to change them for other wives even though their beauty attracts you, except those (captives or slaves) whom your right hand possesses.

33:55 It is no sin on them (the Prophet's wives, if they appear unveiled) before their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their brother's sons, or the sons of their sisters, or their own (believing) women, or their (female) slaves,

Why didn't Allah say: FREE YOUR SLAVES! Slavery is BAD? Certainly the CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE should be able to be explicit. But what is more concerning is the issue of booty and rape. Allah actually told Muslims to rape captive women in front of their husbands.

If we look at the hadiths:

"O Allah's Apostle! We get female captives as our share of booty, and we are interested in their prices, what is your opinion about coitus interruptus?" The Prophet said, "Do you really do that? It is better for you not to do coitus interruptus. A soul that which Allah has destined to exist will surely come into existence.” (Bukhari 34:432)

"We went out with Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) on the expedition to the Bi'l-Mustaliq and took captive some excellent Arab women; and we desired them, for we were suffering from the absence of our wives, (but at the same time) we also desired ransom for them. So we decided to have sexual intercourse with them but by observing 'azl (Withdrawing the male sexual organ before emission of semen to avoid-conception). But we said: We are doing an act whereas Allah's Messenger is amongst us; why not ask him? So we asked Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him), and he said: It does not matter" (Sahih Muslim 3371)

Why didn't Muhammed stop this mass rape of women? And the mass rape happened after the women say Muhammed and his gang slaughter their husbands, sons and fathers. I cannot imagine how terrifying and horrible this would be....to be raped by the men who killed your family. I just don't have the words.....

And then the women would be sold or enslaved:

"Then the apostle sent Sa-d b. Zayd al-Ansari, brother of Abdu'l-Ashal with some of the captive women of Banu Qurayza to Najd and he sold them for horses and weapons." (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham/Hisham 693)

The apostle gave Ali a girl called Rayta; and he gave Uthman a girl called Zaynab; and he gave Umar a girl whom Umar gave to his son Abdullah. (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 878)

Safiyah was taken to Muhammad’s tent. Muhammad wanted to have sex with her after torturing to death her husband. That night Abu Ayyub al-Ansari guarded the tent of Muhammad. Muhammad saw Abu Ayyub & asked him why he was there; he said: "I was afraid for you with this young lady. You killed her father, her husband and many of her relatives, I was really afraid for you on her account". (Ibn Ishaq, p. 766)

Ishaq's Sirat Rasoul Allah" is not Sira and very doubtful, it is generally accepted that
is not What Ishaq had written. While Ishaq is a great scholar much of his work was not saved. What is presented as Ishaq's Sirat is a reconstruction that was based upon a partial copy of an ealier attempted reconsruction. There is no Isnad Chaid to verify the validity of anything in it.

Some much sharpere criticisms of "Ishaq's Sirat Rasoul Allah"

The-Problems-with-Ibn-Ishaq

What is not covered in all of those above quotes is while those are who are permitted to have sexual relation, they all leave out that Muslims can only have Sexual Relations with those that have a valid Nikkah (Marriage Contract) entered into freely by both parties.

We are discussing Islam here. But I do want to ask you:

Can you say that Muhammed was evil/wrong/bad for owning and selling and trading slaves?

I do not have the foggiest idea. I have never seen any verifiable evidence he ever did so. Do you have any verifiable proof he did

There is no evidence he ever owned anything. While the location of the houses of several of his wives is known, no one has ever pointed to any property Muhammad(saw) owned

Can you offer verifiable proof Muhammad(saws) ever raped anyone. Ever had sexual relations outside of Marriage, That he ever stole anything, that he ever murdered anyone or that he kept slaves without freeing them. ?

"What is not covered in all of those above quotes is while those are who are permitted to have sexual relation, they all leave out that Muslims can only have Sexual Relations with those that have a valid Nikkah (Marriage Contract) entered into freely by both parties."

In fact, I have supplied several quotes saying that Muslims can have sex with women 'their right hand possesses'. That means slaves and captive women whom they are not married to.

Muhammed himself owned female slaves and I think he even had a child with one of them.

In the "Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kabir", mention is made of Mariyah. On page 151, it says:
"He [the Lord of Alexandria] presented to the prophet Mariyah, her sister Sirin, a donkey and a mule which was white....The apostle of Allah liked Mariyah who was of white complexion and curly hair and pretty.... Then he cohabited with Mariyah as a handmaid and sent her to his property which he had acquired from Banu al-Nadir."

Tabari 39:194.
"He (Muhammad) used to visit her (Mariyam) there and ordered her to veil herself, [but] he had intercourse with her by virtue of her being his property."

Narrated Anas: The Prophet offered the Fajr Prayer near Khaibar when it was still dark and then said, "Allahu-Akbar! Khaibar is destroyed, for whenever we approach a (hostile) nation (to fight), then evil will be the morning for those who have been warned." Then the inhabitants of Khaibar came out running on the roads. The Prophet had their warriors killed, their offspring and woman taken as captives. Safiya was amongst the captives, She first came in the share of Dahya Alkali but later on she belonged to the Prophet . The Prophet made her manumission as her 'Mahr'.
— Sahih al-Bukhari, 5:59:512 see also Sahih al-Bukhari, 2:14:68 Sahih al-Bukhari, 5:59:447

Again:
"O Allah's Apostle! We get female captives as our share of booty, and we are interested in their prices, what is your opinion about coitus interruptus?" The Prophet said, "Do you really do that? It is better for you not to do coitus interruptus. A soul that which Allah has destined to exist will surely come into existence.” (Bukhari 34:432)

Listen to the men's own words.... "we were interested in their prices", i.e., they wanted to sell them. Do Muslim men marry a women intending to sell her after sex? These men wanted to have sex with their captives, enjoy them, and they later sell them or trade them or keep them as slaves.

This is interesting:
Narrated Kurib: the freed slave of Ibn 'Abbas, that Maimuna bint Al-Harith told him that she manumitted a slave-girl without taking the permission of the Prophet. On the day when it was her turn to be with the Prophet, she said, "Do you know, O Allah's Apostle, that I have manumitted my slave-girl?" He said, "Have you really?" She replied in the affirmative. He said, "You would have got more reward if you had given her (i.e. the slave-girl) to one of your maternal uncles."
— Sahih al-Bukhari, 3:47:765

Muhammed did not want the slave to be freed.

"entered into freely by both parties."

No, I do not think this is correct. Muhammed married Aisha when she was six years old....certainly a 6 year old child cannot give informed consent! And I have heard from many Muslims that such marriages were common (and they still happen - the child brides). I also seem to remember that in Islam, silence is considered consent. What if the woman, or child, is terrified to speak out? I have worked with sexually abused children and I have seen that terror. They do not know what is happening, only that they are powerless. Muhammed had women slaughtered for not behaving as he wished. That would be a huge fear for women.

The hadiths contain the heartbreaking story of Aisha and what Muhammed did to her if you are interested in knowing.

Can you say that Muhammed was evil/wrong/bad for owning and selling and trading slaves?

If you read them in context, they are telling who a Muslim is permitted to Marry. Under all Shariah madhabs (Which are based upon Qur'an, Synnah Ahadith and Sira Sexual relations without marriage are a hadud crime, meaning a crime that requires punishment if s person is found guilty.

Quote:
Do not go near adultery, surely it is an indecency, and an evil way [of fulfilling sexual urge]. (17:32)
Fornication and adultery have severely been condemned in the saying of the Prophet and the Imams. In Islam, pre-marital sex is considered an immoral act against the rights of Allah and one's own sexual organs.
Pre-marital sex is a sin punishable by the Islamic court. If an unmarried man and an unmarried woman are found guilty of fornication in an Islamic court, their punishment will be as the following:
The woman and the man who fornicate scourge each of them a hundred whips; and in the matter of God s religion, let no tenderness for them seize you if you believe in God and the Last Day; and let a party of the believers witness their punishment. (24:2)
If the unmarried man or woman commit fornication more than once, then they will be punished three times by hundred wipes, and if they are proven guilty for the fourth time, then they will be put to death.6 (As for adultery, its punishment is even more severe because married persons have no excuse, whatsoever, to commit adultery. The shari'ah says that married persons guilty of adultery should be stoned to death.)
