The following article expressed views from the psychological perspective on how SOME Muslims turned to be jihadists.
I believe this is good information for all and Muslims to understand the possible signs of potential jihadists and thus such information could possibly saved lives.

.....................
Psychology of sinner-turned-jihadi: Instant purification
By: Nicolai Sennels, psychologist

Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, the jihadi who killed 84 innocents with a truck in Nice, France, on July 14 2016, was no typical radical Muslim. Or was he? After all, Islam not only defines countless things as “sinful” – it also has a cure-all: Jihad.

Mobile phone records suggest Bouhlel used dating websites and dabbled with drugs and drink, all of it being banned by Islamic law, Sharia. His ex-wife claims that he liked pork and did not even go to the mosque.

Islamic law, Sharia, prescribes jihad (violent, holy war) “although you dislike it”. So why would a man born and raised as a Muslim, but who in his daily life lives in obvious contradiction to his religion, suddenly repent, and perform what according to Islam is “the highest deed“, namely losing your life while fighting physically in the cause of Islam

The answer might very well lie in the fact that Islam promises complete purification for past sins to its martyrs: “And if you are killed in the cause of Allah or die – then forgiveness from Allah and mercy are better than whatever they accumulate [in this world].” (Quran, 3:157).

One should not underestimate the psychological power of shame and fear of hell in strongly religious societies, nor the psychological influence of a religion’s divine promise of absolute purification for its martyrs.

Purification through jihad

Purifying oneself through jihad is not uncommon within Islamic societies.
1) Purifying sexual sins:
An Iraqi woman whose code name was “The Mother of Believers” arranged rapes of women. Subsequently, she persuaded 80 raped women into performing suicide jihad attacks as a way to purify themselves from the sin of having been raped.

2) Honorable way out of a life as an outcast:
Forensic pathologist Dr. Yusuf Yadgari claims that, based on autopsies performed on the remains of suicide bombers, nearly 90 percent had a disability or medical condition. In Afghan culture, the handicapped are often perceived as outcasts, and their only chance for honor is to become a martyr. For that same reason, the Taliban often “recruits Afghans with disabilities for suicide bombings”.

3) Escaping the sin of commiting suicide:
Yet another way to use jihad as a way of purification is to camouflage or substitute a real suicide with a religiously motivated suicide mission. Studies conclude that “there is emerging evidence that suicidality may play a role in a significant number of cases” of suicide jihad attacks. Criminal-justice researcher Adam Lankford concludes in his book The Myth of Martyrdom, that there is evidence that far from being normal, jihadis have often suffered from serious mental trauma and “always demonstrate at least a few behaviours on the continuum of suicidality, such as suicide ideation, a suicide plan or previous suicide attempts.”
A report, by Queen Mary University in London, found those at risk of radicalisation are more likely to have depression and be socially isolated than other people with similar backgrounds. Islamic State propaganda videos have previously claimed jihad as a “cure for depression”, a sign perhaps that the sophisticated social media operation is aware of the audience it is targeting.

Jihad: Muslim sinners’ cure-all
Many mentally ill persons are surely easier to persuade into religiously motivated murder because of their deluded state of mind. But the trigger, that sends off jihadis – no matter what their sin is Islam, which stigmatize, threaten and dishonor those who does not follow the Sharia – and at the same time promises forgiveness and mercy to anybody getting killed in the cause of Islam.

The problem is, that being sinful in Islam is so easy, and that the cure is so murderous.

The article is fine to an extent in terms of "psychological perspective" but it is doing nothing but help keep a psychologist in job.

The term "jihadists" itself explains "jihad" is not understood by most people in the West. Most will say "jihadists" means "terrorists".

Therefore, "jihadist" is not an Islamic word but a word created for "terrorist" who claims to be Muslim or just shouts Allahu Akbar before committing a murder. The word for someone doing jihad in Islam is "Mujahid".

The real Mujahid is one who controls his Self (Nafs) from committing a sin or the one who fights back when attacked physically for being a Muslim. Anyone who goes out just to kill anyone indiscriminately, even Muslims, is not a "Mujahid" but "a sinner", "a criminal", "a murderer" even in Islam.

That means he did not care what he was doing even that which is defined "sinful" in Islam. Therefore, he was not an "Islamic" terrorist but can be defined better as an "unislamic terrorist" or just plain terrorist.

In this comment, the psychologist is confused. Islamic law, Sharia, does not prescribe jihad to be "violent, holy war" but such minor jihad as fighting in defense when there is physical attack on Muslims from enemies of the Message of the Qur'an, "although you dislike doing so" (2:216). The next verse (2:217) explains why fighting (in defense) was prescribed for the believers even though they had disliked fighting. It was because of the unbelievers attacking them to turn them back into unbelievers. Initiation of attack by Muslims on innocent people (whether non-Muslims or Muslims) is not jihad in Islam but physical jihad is in defense only.

Martyrs "in the cause of Allah" are not those who kill innocent people and then are killed but those who are killed in a defensive war. The verse refers to a battle at Uhad near Madina when 70 Muslims were killed defending themselves from attack by the Meccan army. Killing innocent people is not "in the cause of Allah" but "in the cause of Shaytan".

None of this justifies suicide in Islam. Suicide in Islam is forbidden (haram) as we must not destroy ourselves with our own hands. Life is given to us by Allah and only Allah has the right to take it away, we do not. In a defensive jihad, situation is either attacking enemy will kil you or you kill the enemy to survive. It is a matter of choosing the best option for you.

Social isolation is of course one of the main reasons (in the West) which I have identified in my posts in the past. This could be addressed in more than one way. Many criminals are social outcasts or failures in their school days and thus isolated from the rest of the civil society. Suicide is often the result of failure leading them to a dead end literally.

The second part of the last sentence is nothing but ignorance about Islam. In reality, being sinful is of course easy and so is cure in Islam. Repentance and mending one's way is the cure in Islam leading to forgiveness on one's sins [2.160], [4.17-18], [3.89], [5.39]. [7.153], [9.104], [19.60], [20.82], [24.5], [42.25], [85.10].

[5.39] But whoever repents after his iniquity and reforms, then surely Allah will turn to him (mercifully); surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

[39.53] Say: O my servants! who have acted extravagantly against their own souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah; surely Allah forgives the faults altogether; surely He is the Forgiving the Merciful.

[4.110] And whoever does evil or acts unjustly to his soul, then asks forgiveness of Allah, he shall find Allah Forgiving, Merciful.

For a psychologist to present suicide in Islam as cure to one's sins is not only ignorance about Islam but an extremely dangerous thing to do. It could radicalize another "jihadist" to another suicidal killing spree of innocent people.

I agree with the above.
Though you do not write in plain English this 'poetic' approach is understandable because the terrible evils and violence linked to the evil laden verses in the Quran are so obvious.

The problem lies in the Koran.
Logically, rationally and objectively it is the Quran in part not the whole.

This is a cheap counter point. The fact is most non-Muslims are not familiar and differentiate between Sharia, Ahadiths, Sunnah, Sira, etc.
So it is understandable the psychologist wrongly related the facts of real terrible evils and violence [seeming in total] to Sharia but on the whole it is still referring and relevant to those evil and violence from Islam-in-part.

Jihad is basically struggle and there are many types of Jihad that are relevant to the Muslims themselves and for the sake of Islam and the cause of Allah.

A "jihadist" in terms of the conventional [West] understanding relates to the group of Muslims who committed the glaring real terrible evils and violence at present and since 1,400 years ago.
So in general it is;
Jihadist = Terrors, evils & violence by Muslims of Islam.
The above term and understanding is not wrong at all, it is merely not precise.

To be precise it is as follows;
Evil prone Muslims = Terrors, evils & violence by SOME Muslims influenced by Islam-in-part.

The psychologist's point was in the general sense and he would have done better if he put it in the precise sense like the above and in alignment with my hypothesis.

Quote:

For a psychologist to present suicide in Islam as cure to one's sins is not only ignorance about Islam but an extremely dangerous thing to do. It could radicalize another "jihadist" to another suicidal killing spree of innocent people.
I agree the typical suicide for no good reasons is not Islamic.

However dying for the cause of Allah is highly recommended and rewarded by Allah.
There are so many verses to support this command by Allah in the Quran and expanded in the Ahadith.

The Qur'an is very clear in this matter
Q4:74 - Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fights in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward.
Sahih Bukhari 53:353 records Muhammad as saying,
"Allah guarantees him who strives in His cause and whose motivation for going out is nothing but Jihad in His cause and belief in His word, that He will admit him into Paradise if martyred or bring him back to his dwelling place with what he gains of reward and booty."
Here Allah is promising vast rewards for those who fight and are slain in his way. But what if you were not prepared to fight in the way of Allah? Muhammad says in SM 20:4696
"One who died but did not fight in the way of Allah nor did he express any desire or determination for Jihad died the death of a hypocrite." Jihad here clearly means fighting in the way of Allah, and those Muslims who do not desire conquering the unbelievers, are liable to an afterlife on par with the hypocrites in Hell.
The Qur'an also guarantees forgiveness for every sin if one is slain in the way of Allah.
Q3:157 And if ye are slain, or die, in the way of Allah, forgiveness and mercy from Allah are far better than all they could amass.
The above verses greatly influenced and inspired vulnerable Muslims who had been very sinful, depressed and had other mental illness to quickest paths to repentance, salvation and superior rewards in Paradise.

The psychologist is right on target with this vulnerable to commit evils and violence sanctioned by Allah and Islam;

Quote:
Jihad: Muslim sinners’ cure-all
Many mentally ill persons are surely easier to persuade into religiously motivated murder because of their deluded state of mind. But the trigger, that sends off jihadist – no matter what their sin is
-Islam, which stigmatize, threaten and dishonor those who does not follow the Sharia
-and at the same time promises forgiveness and mercy to anybody getting killed in the cause of Islam.

The problem is, that being sinful in Islam is so easy, and that the cure is so murderous.
Instead of 'Sharia' he should have just mentioned 'the evil prone are triggered by evil laden elements in the Quran and "Islam-in-part."

You are ignorant of human nature regarding the vulnerable depressed, very sinful and problematic Muslims.
1. General these Muslims are the vulnerable ones who commit a lot of sins [Islamic] who drink alcohol like water, gambles, womanizing, commit all sort of crimes, and all sorts of sins [Islamic]. The other Muslims the ones with various psychological problems, depression, etc.

2. Generally these people are very involved in their sins and have so much problem that they are not very conscious of the fear of death/mortality.

3. Then they are exposed to a preacher [in prison or elsewhere] or has the sudden awareness on their own they and all humans are mortal and this has a strong psychological impact on them. In the case of ISIS and similar groups they will deliberate seek out these vulnerable Muslims wherever they can find them and trigger that existential fears of mortality in them.

4. When these vulnerable Muslims are triggered with the fear of death, they will naturally have the strongest urge for immortality.

5. The Islamic preacher will then proselytize to them that they can be saved by Allah and quote the various verses in the Quran or Ahadith.

6. But these sinful Muslims will feel VERY guilty of their past sins and worry about their qualification for immortality from Allah.

7. Then these opportunistic evil preachers will quote from the Quran and Ahadith on how even the very sinful can get to heaven expeditiously by highlighting the verses on martyrdom. Besides the evil preachers, there are some Muslims who can read of these evil laden verses on their own and are influenced to be lone wolf evil jihadists.
The above model of modus operandi is proven by so many cases.
It is often reported some Muslims were dancing and partying like crazy in some clubs and the next time one heard about them is they are carrying a machine gun killing many innocent non-Muslims. Note the cases of the Tunisia, Paris, Orlando, etc. Muslims.
The Orlando evil prone Muslims must be very guilty of his homosexual tendencies and perhaps have had homosexual encounters. Thus the fastest for him to get wash off his sins was to seek repentance and perform the highest act for the cause of Allah to get to Paradise expeditiously.

This OP is about those with psychological problems who can easily turned terrorists and killed many innocent.

However in another perspective even the very goody-two-shoes [good natured, educated, not sinful] can become evil when influenced and inspired by the evil laden verses in the Quran & Ahadith*.

Khalif, note whenever I mentioned Ahadith, take it that it is not related to you or other Quran-Only Muslims. I don't want to keep qualifying and repeating you do not accept the Ahadith.
