If they desist fighting and persecuting because your religion is for Allah then there should be no hostility (as an offensive fighting). Fighting here is only in defense when Muslims were persecuted because their religion was for Allah rather than 360 gods.

Khalif,

What you missed out is except against the oppressors.
The word is Až-žālimīna, from the roots, Za-Lam-Miim.
"zalim" is a from the verb I Active Participle, who is acting 'zalim'.
To interpret Až-žālimīna as 'oppressors' is insufficient.

Pickthall is correct in translating Až-žālimīna as infidels who commit wrongdoings.

Therefore muslims can begin hostilities on infidels who commit wrongdoings [Až-žālimīna]
in the context of [Až-žālimīna] in the Quran which cover a wide range of activities.

And if you come to those who have been given the Book with every sign they will not follow your focal point, nor will you follow their focal point, nor will some of them even follow each others focal point. And if you were to follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, then you would be one of the wicked.

2:193

The divorce is allowed twice. So, either they remain together equitably, or they part ways with goodness. And it is not lawful for you to take back anything you have given them unless you fear that they will not uphold the boundaries of God. So if you fear that they will not uphold the boundaries of God, then there is no sin upon them for what is given back. These are the boundaries of God so do not transgress them. And whoever shall transgress the boundaries of God, then these are the wicked.

2:246

Did you not note the leaders of the Children of Israel after Moses, they said to their prophet: "Send us a king that we may fight in the cause of God;" he said: "Are you not concerned that if fighting is decreed for you, you will then not fight?" They said: "And why should we not fight in the cause of God when we have been expelled from our homes along with our children." So it was, that when fighting was decreed for them they turned away, except for a few of them! God is fully aware of the wicked.

Have you not noted him who debated with Abraham regarding his Lord, while God had given him a kingship? Abraham said: "My Lord is the One who gives life and death," he said: "I bring life and death." Abraham said: "God brings the sun from the east, so you bring it from the west." The one who rejected was baffled! And God does not guide the wicked people.

We know that you are saddened by what they say; they are not rejecting you, but it is the revelations of God which the wicked disregard.

6:47

And do not turn away those who call on their Lord at dawn and dusk seeking His face; you are not responsible for their judgment, nor are they responsible for your judgment; if you turn them away, then you will be of the wicked.

6:58

And if you encounter those who make fun of Our revelations, then turn away from them until they move on to a different narrative; and if the devil makes you forget, then do not sit after remembering with the wicked people.

6:93

And who is more wicked than he who invents lies about God, or says: "It has been inspired to me," when We did not inspire anything to him; or who says: "I will bring down the same as what God has sent down." And if you could only see the wicked at the moments of death when the angels have their arms opened: "Bring yourselves out, today you will be given the severest punishment for what you used to say about God without truth, and you used to be arrogant towards His revelations."

Or were you witnesses when God ordered you with this?" Who is more wicked than he who invents lies about God to misguide the people without knowledge. God does not guide the wicked people.

Do you understand what is the impact of the above verses from Chapter 2 to Chapter 10 which all contain the term Až-žālimīna.

It meant that in 2:193 Allah give sanction to Muslims to begin hostilities against non-Muslims if they are Až-žālimīna in a similar context as the above verses and those below.

Here are more verses with Až-žālimīna from Chapter 11 to Chapter 76.

11:18

And who is more wicked than he who invents lies about God? They will be displayed before their Lord, and the witnesses will say: "These are the ones who have lied about their Lord." Alas, the curse of God will be upon the wicked.

11:31

11:44

And it was said: "O land, swallow your water, and O sky, cease." And the water was diminished, and the matter concluded. And it came to rest on the Judi, and it was said: "Away with the wicked people."

12:75

Qāla Ma`ādha Allāhi 'An Na'khudha 'Illā Man Wajadnā Matā`anā `Indahu 'Innā 'Idhāan Lažālimūna
He said: "Refuge is sought with God that we would take anyone except he whom we found our belongings with. Indeed, we would then be wrong doers."

14:13
Wa Qāla Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Lirusulihim Lanukhrijannakum Min 'ArĐinā 'Aw Lata`ūdunna Fī Millatinā Fa'awĥá 'Ilayhim Rabbuhum Lanuhlikanna Až-žālimīna
And those who rejected said to their messengers: "We will expel you from our land, or you will return to our creed." It was then that their Lord inspired to them: "We will destroy the wicked."

14:22
Wa Qāla Ash-Shayţānu Lammā QuĐiya Al-'Amru 'Inna Allāha Wa`adakum Wa`da Al-Ĥaqqi Wa Wa`adtukum Fa'akhlaftukum Wa Mā Kāna Lī `Alaykum Min Sulţānin 'Illā 'An Da`awtukum Fāstajabtum Lī Falā Talūmūnī Wa Lūmū 'Anfusakum Mā 'Anā Bimuşrikhikum Wa Mā 'Antum Bimuşrikhīya 'Innī Kafartu Bimā 'Ashraktumūnī Min Qablu 'Inna Až-žālimīna Lahum `Adhābun 'Alīmun
And the devil said when the matter was complete: "God had promised you the promise of truth, and I promised you and broke my promise. And I had no power over you except that I invited you and you responded to me. So do not blame me, but blame yourselves; I cannot help you nor can you help me. I reject that you have set me up as a partner before this; the wicked will have a painful retribution."

14:27
Yuthabbitu Allāhu Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Bil-Qawli Ath-Thābiti Fī Al-Ĥayāati Ad-Dunyā Wa Fī Al-'Ākhirati Wa YuĐillu Allāhu Až-žālimīna Wa Yaf`alu Allāhu Mā Yashā'u
God makes firm those who believe with firm sayings in the worldly life, and in the Hereafter. And God misguides the wicked, and God does what He wishes.

14:42
Wa Lā Taĥsabanna Allāha Ghāfilāan `Ammā Ya`malu Až-žālimūna 'Innamā Yu'uakhkhiruhum Liyawmin Tashkhaşu Fīhi Al-'Abşāru
And do not think that God is unaware of what the wicked do. He is merely delaying them to a Day when all eyes are watching.

15:78
Wa 'In Kāna 'Aşĥābu Al-'Aykati Lažālimīna
And the dwellers of the forest were wicked.

16:28
Al-Ladhīna Tatawaffāhumu Al-Malā'ikatu žālimī 'Anfusihim Fa'alqaw As-Salama Mā Kunnā Na`malu Min Sū'in Balá 'Inna Allāha `Alīmun Bimā Kuntum Ta`malūna
Those whom their lives are terminated by the angels, while they had wronged themselves: "Amnesty, we have not done any evil!" "Alas, God is aware of what you have done."

16:113
Wa Laqad Jā'ahum Rasūlun Minhum Fakadhdhabūhu Fa'akhadhahumu Al-`Adhābu Wa Hum žālimūna
And a messenger came to them from themselves, but they denied him, so the punishment took them while they were wicked.

17:47

We are fully aware of what they are listening to, for they are listening to you but while they are in private counsel the wicked say: "You are following a man who is bewitched!"

17:82
Wa Nunazzilu Mina Al-Qur'āni Mā Huwa Shifā'un Wa Raĥmatun Lilmu'uminīna Wa Lā Yazīdu Až-žālimīna 'Illā Khasārāan
And We send down from the Qur'an what is a healing and mercy to the believers. And it only increases the wicked in their loss.

17:99
'Awalam Yaraw 'Anna Allāha Al-Ladhī Khalaqa As-Samāwāti Wa Al-'ArĐa Qādirun `Alá 'An Yakhluqa Mithlahum Wa Ja`ala Lahum 'Ajalāan Lā Rayba Fīhi Fa'abá Až-žālimūna 'Illā Kufūrāan
Did they not see that God who has created the heavens and the earth is able to create their like? And He has made an appointed time for them in which there is no doubt. But the wicked refuse anything except rejection.

18:29
Wa Quli Al-Ĥaqqu Min Rabbikum Faman Shā'a Falyu'umin Wa Man Shā'a Falyakfur 'Innā 'A`tadnā Lilžžālimīna Nārāan 'Aĥāţa Bihim Surādiquhā Wa 'In Yastaghīthū Yughāthū Bimā'in Kālmuhli Yashwī Al-Wujūha Bi'sa Ash-Sharābu Wa Sā'at Murtafaqāan
And say: "The truth is from your Lord, so let whoever desires believe, and whoever desires reject." We have prepared for the wicked a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them. And if they cry out, they are given a water like boiling oil which burns their faces. What a dreadful drink and what a miserable place!

18:35
Wa Dakhala Jannatahu Wa Huwa žālimun Linafsihi Qāla Mā 'Ažunnu 'An Tabīda Hadhihi 'Abadāan
And he went back into his garden while he had wronged himself. He said: "I do not think that this will ever perish."

18:50
Wa 'Idh Qulnā Lilmalā'ikati Asjudū Li'dama Fasajadū 'Illā 'Iblīsa Kāna Mina Al-Jinni Fafasaqa `An 'Amri Rabbihi 'Afatattakhidhūnahu Wa Dhurrīyatahu 'Awliyā'a Min Dūnī Wa Hum Lakum `Adūwun Bi'sa Lilžžālimīna Badalāan
And We said to the angels: "Yield to Adam." So they all yielded except for Satan. He was of the Jinn, he disobeyed the order of his Lord. Will you take him and his progeny as allies besides Me, while they are your enemy? Miserable for the transgressors is the substitute!

19:38
'Asmi` Bihim Wa 'Abşir Yawma Ya'tūnanā Lakini Až-žālimūna Al-Yawma Fī Đalālin Mubīnin
Listen to what they say and watch on the Day they come to Us. But the wicked today are in a clear misguidance.

19:72
Thumma Nunajjī Al-Ladhīna Attaqaw Wa Nadharu Až-žālimīna Fīhā Jithīyāan
Then We will save those who were righteous, and We will leave the wicked in it on their knees.

21:11
Wa Kam Qaşamnā Min Qaryatin Kānat žālimatan Wa 'Ansha'nā Ba`dahā Qawmāan 'Ākharīna
And how many a town have We destroyed because it was wicked, and We established after them a different people?

21:14
Qālū Yā Waylanā 'Innā Kunnā žālimīna
They said: "Woe to us, we have been wicked!"

21:29
Wa Man Yaqul Minhum 'Innī 'Ilahun Min Dūnihi Fadhālika Najzīhi Jahannama Kadhālika Najzī Až-žālimīna
And whoever of them says: "I am a god besides Him," then that person We will punish with Hell. It is such that We punish the wicked.

21:46
Wa La'in Massat/hum Nafĥatun Min `Adhābi Rabbika Layaqūlunna Yā Waylanā 'Innā Kunnā žālimīna
And if a trace of the torment of your Lord touches them, they will say: "Woe to us, we have been wicked!"

21:59
Qālū Man Fa`ala Hādhā Bi'ālihatinā 'Innahu Lamina Až-žālimīna
They said: "Who has done this to our gods? He is surely one of the wicked."

21:64
Faraja`ū 'Ilá 'Anfusihim Faqālū 'Innakum 'Antumu Až-žālimūna
So they turned and said to themselves: "It is indeed ourselves who have been wicked!"

21:87
Wa Dhā An-Nūni 'Idh Dhahaba MughāĐibāan Fažanna 'An Lan Naqdira `Alayhi Fanādá Fī Až-žulumāti 'An Lā 'Ilāha 'Illā 'Anta Subĥānaka 'Innī Kuntu Mina Až-žālimīna
And the one with 'N,' when he went off in anger, and he thought that We would not be able to take him. Then he called out in the darkness: "There is no god except You! Glory be to You, I was of the wicked!"

21:97
Wāqtaraba Al-Wa`du Al-Ĥaqqu Fa'idhā Hiya Shākhişatun 'Abşāru Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Yā Waylanā Qad Kunnā Fī Ghaflatin Min Hādhā Bal Kunnā žālimīna
And the promise of truth draws near. Then, when it is seen by the eyes of those who rejected: "Woe to us, we have been oblivious to this. Indeed, we were wicked!"

22:45
Faka'ayyin Min Qaryatin 'Ahlaknāhā Wa Hiya žālimatun Fahiya Khāwiyatun `Alá `Urūshihā Wa Bi'rin Mu`aţţalatin Wa Qaşrin Mashīdin
So how many a town have We destroyed while it was doing wrong, so that it is lying in ruins with its wells abandoned, and empty palaces.

22:48
Wa Ka'ayyin Min Qaryatin 'Amlaytu Lahā Wa Hiya žālimatun Thumma 'Akhadhtuhā Wa 'Ilayya Al-Maşīru
And many a town I have given it respite while it was doing wrong, then I seized it! And to Me is the destiny.

22:53
Liyaj`ala Mā Yulqī Ash-Shayţānu Fitnatan Lilladhīna Fī Qulūbihim MaraĐun Wa Al-Qāsiyati Qulūbuhum Wa 'Inna Až-žālimīna Lafī Shiqāqin Ba`īdin
That He may make what the devil has cast as a test for those who have a disease in their hearts and those whose hearts are hardened. And the wicked are far away in opposition.

22:71
Wa Ya`budūna Min Dūni Allāhi Mā Lam Yunazzil Bihi Sulţānāan Wa Mā Laysa Lahum Bihi `Ilmun Wa Mā Lilžžālimīna Min Naşīrin
And they serve besides God what He did not send any authority upon, and what they have no knowledge of. And the wicked will not have any helper.

23:28
Fa'idhā Astawayta 'Anta Wa Man Ma`aka `Alá Al-Fulki Faquli Al-Ĥamdu Lillāhi Al-Ladhī Najjānā Mina Al-Qawmi Až-žālimīna
So when you and those who are with you have embarked on the ship, then say: "All praise is due to God who has saved us from the wicked people."

23:41
Fa'akhadhat/humu Aş-Şayĥatu Bil-Ĥaqqi Faja`alnāhum Ghuthā'an Fabu`dāan Lilqawmi Až-žālimīna
So the scream took them with justice, and We made them as dead plants. So away with the wicked people.

23:94
Rabbi Falā Taj`alnī Fī Al-Qawmi Až-žālimīna
"My Lord, then do not leave me among the wicked people."

23:107
Rabbanā 'Akhrijnā Minhā Fa'in `Udnā Fa'innā žālimūna
"Our Lord, bring us out of it, and if we return to such, then we are indeed wicked."

24:50
'Afī Qulūbihim MaraĐun 'Am Artābū 'Am Yakhāfūna 'An Yaĥīfa Allāhu `Alayhim Wa Rasūluhu Bal 'Ūlā'ika Humu Až-žālimūn
Is there a disease in their hearts, or are they doubtful? Or do they fear that God and His messenger would wrong them in the judgment? In fact, they are the wrong doers.

25:8
'Aw Yulqá 'Ilayhi Kanzun 'Aw Takūnu Lahu Jannatun Ya'kulu Minhā Wa Qāla Až-žālimūna 'In Tattabi`ūna 'Illā Rajulāan Masĥūrāan
"Or that a treasure is given to him, or that he has a paradise that he eats from." And the wicked said: "You are but following a man bewitched!"

25:27
Wa Yawma Ya`aĐĐu Až-žālimu `Alá Yadayhi Yaqūlu Yā Laytanī Attakhadhtu Ma`a Ar-Rasūli Sabīlāan
And that Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hand and say: "I wish I had taken the path with the messenger!"

25:37
Wa Qawma Nūĥin Lammā Kadhdhabū Ar-Rusula 'Aghraqnāhum Wa Ja`alnāhum Lilnnāsi 'Āyatan Wa 'A`tadnā Lilžžālimīna `Adhābāan 'Alīmāan
And the people of Noah, when they denied the messengers We drowned them, and We made them a lesson for the people. And We have prepared for the wicked a painful retribution.

26:10
Wa 'Idh Nādá Rabbuka Mūsá 'Ani A'ti Al-Qawma Až-žālimīna
And when your Lord called to Moses: "Go to the people who are wicked."

26:209
Dhikrá Wa Mā Kunnā žālimīna
By way of a reminder, and We were never unjust.

28:21
Fakharaja Minhā Khā'ifāan Yataraqqabu Qāla Rabbi Najjinī Mina Al-Qawmi Až-žālimīna
He exited the city, afraid and watchful. He said: "My Lord, save me from the wicked people."

28:25
Fajā'at/hu 'Iĥdāhumā Tamshī `Alá Astiĥyā'in Qālat 'Inna 'Abī Yad`ūka Liyajziyaka 'Ajra Mā Saqayta Lanā Falammā Jā'ahu Wa Qaşşa `Alayhi Al-Qaşaşa Qāla Lā Takhaf Najawta Mina Al-Qawmi Až-žālimīna
So one of the two women approached him, shyly, and said: "My father invites you to reward you for watering for us." So when he came to him, and told to him the stories, he said: "Do not fear, for you have been saved from the wicked people."

28:37
Wa Qāla Mūsá Rabbī 'A`lamu Biman Jā'a Bil-Hudá Min `Indihi Wa Man Takūnu Lahu `Āqibatu Ad-Dāri 'Innahu Lā Yufliĥu Až-žālimūna
And Moses said: "My Lord is fully aware of who has come with the guidance from Him, and who will have the best deal in the Hereafter. The wicked never succeed."

28:40
Fa'akhadhnāhu Wa Junūdahu Fanabadhnāhum Fī Al-Yammi Fānžur Kayfa Kāna `Āqibatu Až-žālimīna
So We took him and his soldiers, and We cast them into the sea. So see how was the end of the wicked!

28:50
Fa'in Lam Yastajībū Laka Fā`lam 'Annamā Yattabi`ūna 'Ahwā'ahum Wa Man 'AĐallu Mimmani Attaba`a Hawāhu Bighayri Hudáan Mina Allāhi 'Inna Allāha Lā Yahdī Al-Qawma Až-žālimīna
But if they fail to respond to you, then know that they follow only their desires. And who is more astray than he who follows his desire, without guidance from God? God does not guide the wicked people.

28:59
Wa Mā Kāna Rabbuka Muhlika Al-Qurá Ĥattá Yab`atha Fī 'Ummihā Rasūlāan Yatlū `Alayhim 'Āyātinā Wa Mā Kunnā Muhlikī Al-Qurá 'Illā Wa 'Ahluhā žālimūna
And your Lord was not to destroy the towns until He sends a messenger to their capital, to recite Our revelations to them. And We do not destroy the towns unless its people are wicked.

29:14
Wa Laqad 'Arsalnā Nūĥāan 'Ilá Qawmihi Falabitha Fīhim 'Alfa Sanatin 'Illā Khamsīna `Āmāan Fa'akhadhahumu Aţ-Ţūfānu Wa Hum žālimūn
And We had sent Noah to his people, so he stayed with them one thousand years less fifty. Then the flood took them while they were wicked.

29:31
Wa Lammā Jā'at Rusulunā 'Ibrāhīma Bil-Bushrá Qālū 'Innā Muhlikū 'Ahli Hadhihi Al-Qaryati 'Inna 'Ahlahā Kānū žālimīna
And when Our messengers came to Abraham with good news, they said: "We are to destroy the people of such a town, for its people have been wicked."

29:49
Bal Huwa 'Āyātun Bayyinātun Fī Şudūri Al-Ladhīna 'Ūtū Al-`Ilma Wa Mā Yajĥadu Bi'āyātinā 'Illā Až-žālimūna
In fact, it is a clear revelation in the chests of those who have been given knowledge. And it is only the wicked who doubt Our revelations.

31:11
Hādhā Khalqu Allāhi Fa'arūnī Mādhā Khalaqa Al-Ladhīna Min Dūnihi Bali Až-žālimūna Fī Đalālin Mubīnin
This is the creation of God, so show me what those besides Him have created? Indeed, the transgressors are far astray.

34:31
Wa Qāla Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Lan Nu'umina Bihadhā Al-Qur'āni Wa Lā Bial-Ladhī Bayna Yadayhi Wa Law Tará 'Idhi Až-žālimūna Mawqūfūna `Inda Rabbihim Yarji`u Ba`Đuhum 'Ilá Ba`Đin Al-Qawla Yaqūlu Al-Ladhīna AstuĐ`ifū Lilladhīna Astakbarū Lawlā 'Antum Lakunnā Mu'uminīna
And those who rejected have said: We will not believe in this Quran, nor in what is already with him. And if you could but see these transgressors when they stand before their Lord, how they will accuse one another back and forth. Those who were weak will say to those who were mighty: If it were not for you, we would have been believers!

35:32
Thumma 'Awrathnā Al-Kitāba Al-Ladhīna Aşţafaynā Min `Ibādinā Faminhum žālimun Linafsihi Wa Minhum Muqtaşidun Wa Minhum Sābiqun Bil-Khayrāti Bi'idhni Allāhi Dhālika Huwa Al-FaĐlu Al-Kabīru
Then We inherited the Book to those whom We selected from Our servants. Subsequently, some of them wronged themselves, and others upheld it partly, while others were eager to work righteousness in accordance with the will of God; such is the great benefit.

35:37
Wa Hum Yaşţarikhūna Fīhā Rabbanā 'Akhrijnā Na`mal Şāliĥāan Ghayra Al-Ladhī Kunnā Na`malu 'Awalam Nu`ammirkum Mā Yatadhakkaru Fīhi Man Tadhakkara Wa Jā'akumu An-Nadhīru Fadhūqū Famā Lilžžālimīna Min Naşīr
And they will scream in it: Our Lord, let us out, and we will work righteousness instead of the works we used to do. Did We not give you a long life so that he who would remember would take heed, and a warner came to you? Therefore, taste, for the transgressors will have no supporter.

35:40
Qul 'Ara'aytum Shurakā'akumu Al-Ladhīna Tad`ūna Min Dūni Allāhi 'Arūnī Mādhā Khalaqū Mina Al-'ArĐi 'Am Lahum Shirkun Fī As-Samāwāti 'Am 'Ātaynāhum Kitābāan Fahum `Alá Bayyinatin Minhu Bal 'In Ya`idu Až-žālimūna Ba`Đuhum Ba`Đāan 'Illā Ghurūrāan
Say: Do you see the partners whom you have called on besides God? Show me what they have created on the earth. Or do they possess any partnership in the heavens? Or have We given them a book wherein they are taking knowledge from it? Indeed, what the transgressors promise one another is no more than arrogance.

37:63
'Innā Ja`alnāhā Fitnatan Lilžžālimīna
We have made it a punishment for the transgressors.

37:113
Wa Bāraknā `Alayhi Wa `Alá 'Isĥāqa Wa Min Dhurrīyatihimā Muĥsinun Wa žālimun Linafsihi Mubīnun
And We blessed him and Isaac. And from among their progeny, some are righteous, and some are clearly wicked.

39:24
'Afaman Yattaqī Biwajhihi Sū'a Al-`Adhābi Yawma Al-Qiyāmati Wa Qīla Lilžžālimīna Dhūqū Mā Kuntum Taksibūna
As he who saves his face from the terrible retribution on the Day of Resurrection. And it will be said to the transgressors: Taste for what you have earned.

40:18
Wa 'Andhirhum Yawma Al-'Āzifati 'Idhi Al-Qulūbu Ladá Al-Ĥanājiri Kāžimīna Mā Lilžžālimīna Min Ĥamīmin Wa Lā Shafī`in Yuţā`u
And warn them of the imminent Day, when the hearts will reach the throats, and many will be remorseful. The transgressors will have no friend nor intercessor to be obeyed.

40:52
Yawma Lā Yanfa`u Až-žālimīna Ma`dhiratuhum Wa Lahumu Al-La`natu Wa Lahum Sū'u Ad-Dāri
A Day when excuses will be of no help to the transgressors, and they will be cursed, and they will have the worst abode.

42:8
Wa Law Shā'a Allāhu Laja`alahum 'Ummatan Wāĥidatan Wa Lakin Yudkhilu Man Yashā'u Fī Raĥmatihi Wa Až-žālimūna Mā Lahum Min Wa Līyin Wa Lā Naşīrin
And if God had willed, He could have made them one nation. But He admits whom He wills into His mercy. And the transgressors will have neither an ally, nor helper.

42:21

Or do they have partners who decree for them a system which has not been authorized by God? And if it were not for the word already given, they would have been judged immediately. Indeed, the transgressors will have a painful retribution.

42:22

You see the transgressors worried because of what they had done; and it will come back at them. As for those who believed and do good works, they will be in gardens of bliss. They will have what they wish from their Lord. This is the great blessing.

42:40
Wa Jazā'u Sayyi'atin Sayyi'atun Mithluhā Faman `Afā Wa 'Aşlaĥa Fa'ajruhu `Alá Allāhi 'Innahu Lā Yuĥibbu Až-žālimīna
The recompense for a crime shall be its equivalence, but whoever forgives and makes right, then his reward is upon God. He does not like the wrongdoers.

42:44
Wa Man YuĐlili Allāhu Famā Lahu Min Wa Līyin Min Ba`dihi Wa Tará Až-žālimīna Lammā Ra'aw Al-`Adhāba Yaqūlūna Hal 'Ilá Maraddin Min Sabīlin
And whoever God sends astray will not have any ally after Him. And you will see the transgressors, when they see the retribution, saying: Is there any way we can go back?

42:45

And you will see them being displayed to it, in fearful humiliation, and looking, while trying to avoid looking. And those who believed will say: The losers are those who lost their souls and their families on the Day of Resurrection. The transgressors will be in a lasting retribution.

43:76
Wa Mā žalamnāhum Wa Lakin Kānū Humu Až-žālimīna
And We did not wrong them, but it was they who were the wrongdoers.

45:19
'Innahum Lan Yughnū `Anka Mina Allāhi Shay'āan Wa 'Inna Až-žālimīna Ba`Đuhum 'Awliyā'u Ba`Đin Wa Allāhu Wa Līyu Al-Muttaqīna
They cannot help you against God in the least. And the transgressors are allies to one another, while God is the Protector of the righteous.

46:10

Say: Do you see that if it were from God, and you rejected it, and a witness from the Children of Israel bore witness to its similarity, and he has believed, while you have turned arrogant? Surely,God does not guide the wicked people.

49:11

O you who believe, let not any people ridicule other people, for they may be better than they. Nor shall any women ridicule other women, for they may be better than they. Nor shall you mock one another, or call each other names; miserable indeed is the name of wickedness after attaining faith. And anyone who does not repent, then these are the transgressors.

59:17
Fakāna `Āqibatahumā 'Annahumā Fī An-Nāri Khālidayni Fīhā Wa Dhalika Jazā'u Až-žālimīna
So the destiny for both of them is the Fire, abiding therein. And such is the recompense for the wicked.

60:9

But God does prohibit you regarding those who fought you because of your system, and drove you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out. You shall not ally with them. Those who ally with them, then such are the transgressors.

61:7
Wa Man 'Ažlamu Mimmani Aftará `Alá Allāhi Al-Kadhiba Wa Huwa Yud`á 'Ilá Al-'Islāmi Wa Allāhu Lā Yahdī Al-Qawma Až-žālimīna
And who is more evil than he who invents lies about God, while he is being invited to submission? And God does not guide the wicked people.

62:5

The example of those who were given the Torah, but then failed to uphold it, is like the donkey that is carrying a cargo of books. Miserable indeed is the example of the people who denied the revelations of God. And God does not guide the wicked people.

62:7
Wa Lā Yatamannawnahu 'Abadāan Bimā Qaddamat 'Aydīhim Wa Allāhu `Alīmun Biž-žālimīna
But they will never long for it, because of what their hands have delivered. God is fully aware of the wicked.

66:11

And God puts forth as an example of those who believed the wife of Pharaoh. She said: My Lord, build a home for me near You in the Paradise, and save me from Pharaoh and his works; and save me from the transgressing people.

68:29
Qālū Subĥāna Rabbinā 'Innā Kunnā žālimīna
They said: Glory be to our Lord. We have transgressed.

71:24

Wa Qad 'AĐallū Kathīrāan Wa Lā Tazidi Až-žālimīna 'Illā Đalālāan
And they have misguided many, but We only increase the wicked in misguidance.

71:28

"My Lord, forgive me, and my parents, and whoever enters my home as a believer, and the believing males, and the believing females; and do not increase the wicked except in destruction."

76:31
Yudkhilu Man Yashā'u Fī Raĥmatihi Wa Až-žālimīna 'A`adda Lahum `Adhābāan 'Alīmāan
He dmits whom He wills to His mercy. And as for the wicked, He has prepared for them a painful retribution.

The above is merely one example i.e. 2:193 and why 2:193 justify Muslims can begin hostilities against infidels if the above context exists.
Note I have provided almost hundred verses to support by point.

As I had stated, I will produce 3,400++ to support my main points and I will produce hundreds of verses to support my other sub-points later or when my project is finished.

I can anticipate you will give an 'ostrich view' [head in sand] to the above.
I think if I put a "dinosaur" in front of you, you will still not see it re such matters.
As far as I am concern I will present objective views and they will be accepted by those who are rational with 'open eyes.'

Continuum,

That 'ostrich view' [head in sand] comment even before I had responded to your posts here in this new thread was a comment in utter ignorance. You had no idea as to what would be my view. Too bad!

Now that you have made it clear that you have already submitted a Master Level thesis on the "evil elements" in the Qur'aan, I take it that your understanding of what constitutes 'wrongdoings' in the verses of the Qur'aan is already in your conclusion.

Therefore, now it is up to me to know how you reached your conclusion and whether your Master Level thesis had any credibility.

So, what was your understanding of the word "az-zalimin" in the Qur'aan that you must have used in your thesis?

I had quoted 2:193 as translated by Shakir. Therefore, I did not quote it as "infidels who commit wrongdoings.

You say that Pickthall is correct to translate 'az-zalimina' as infidels who commit wrongdoings. How did you describe these 'wrongdoings' in your thesis?

So the onus is upon you to tell us what constitutes 'wrongdoings'.

I look forward to a Master Level reply!

You did not read post #1 and #2 fully???

I provided near to a hundred of verses in post #1 and #2 containing 'az-zalimina' which relate to all sorts of wrongdoings.
Therefore any infidels who perform the acts related to the above verses are deem to have committed wrongdoings, thus are Až-žālimūna. As such the Quran permit Muslims [SOME will respond] to begin hostilities [as the exception] on the infidels as per 2:193

Note two examples of wrongdoings;
5:51 O you who believe, do not take the Jews and the Nazarenes as allies, for they are allies to one another; and whoever takes them as such from among you is one of them. God does not guide the wicked people.
3:94
Famani Aftará `Alá Allāhi Al-Kadhiba Min Ba`di Dhālika Fa'ūlā'ika Humu Až-žālimūna
Whoever invents lies about God after this, these are the wicked.
The Jews and Christians invented lies about God [before or after], i.e. ascribed son of God, therefore they are the wrongdoers, i.e. the 'az-zalimina.'
Since they are the 'az-zalimina', Muslilms can begin hostilities on Jews and Christians as an exception in 2:193.

3:94 is just one example. Don't jump on this, but review all the other acts which are wrong doings by the az-zalimina.

In my thesis I will analyze all the types of wrongdoings re 'az-zalimina' and compile them in an effective presentation from which one can see how easily SOME [not all] Muslims will be able to find justifications within them to initiate hostilities against the infidels in the beliefs they are doing righteously in the eyes of Allah [per Allah's words in the Quran].

Note this point re 2:193 is not the only case, there are many cases all over the Quran for the evil prone Muslims to find justifications to initiate hostilities against infidels.

I would not respond at that level unless I am sure the readers are up to it and demand for it. This is not the case here. What is critical is my approach is basically objective and every statement I made here must be supported by evidence [provision for inadvertent errors to be corrected], and not wild claims. I have already provided sufficient evidences and explanation here.

Here again, if you have written your Master Level thesis, using 2:193 on such basis as you describe here, you have written it in ignorance of what is actually stated in the Qur'aan. The verse 2:193 does not command Muslims to begin hostilities on infidels on the basis of them being mere infidels. The persecutors mentioned in the verse were infidels. The verse commands no hostilities against those who stop the persecutions. Therefore the 'az-zalimina' in the verse is not just infidels or believers but all those doing "zulm" (Muslims included as in 2:229 and other verses).

These verses do not command Muslims to begin hostilities on Jews and Muslims. You are inventing this lie about the Qur'aan.

You do not even know what is meant by the word ʿud'wāna' in the Qur'aan. You read the English word "hostility" in the translation and immediately bury your head in English linguistic hole unable to get out of it. It's your own fault that you haven't understood the Qur'aan properly. Do you even understand that the Arabic word ʿud'wāna' may not be anything to do with English word hostility?

Here is your problem of relying only on English words and not doing more research on that word to see what is meant by the word in the Arabic Qur'aan:

[2:193] And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility (ʿud'wāna') except against wrongdoers. (Pickthall)

[28:28] He said: That (is settled) between thee and me. Whichever of the two terms I fulfil, there will be no injustice (ʿud'wāna') to me, and Allah is Surety over what we say. (Pickthall)

[28:28] He said: "Be that (the agreement) between me and thee: whichever of the two terms I fulfil let there be no ill-will (ʿud'wāna') to me. Be Allah a witness to what we say." (Yusuf Ali)

[28:28] Answered [Moses]: "Thus shall it be between me and thee! Whichever of the two terms I fulfil, let there be no ill-will (ʿud'wāna') against me. And God be witness to all that we say!" (Asad)

As you can see, even Pickthall has translated the word "ud'wana" differently in two different verses. It is so because it is not meant to be "hostility" that is in English and in your mind. It is more like disagreement as between you and I.

There is no need for me to jump at it. In the Qur'aan, the word 'az-zalimina' is not reserved for only the infidels but anyone (even Jews, Christians and Muslims) who do wrong. All those who kill peaceful people are "az-zalimina" (Zalimin). In my first language (not Arabic), a Zalim is someone who is cruel. Cruelty is "wrong". So the cruel person is wrongdoer. In Arabic, all those who do wrong are zalimin. You need to grow out of thinking that only the infidels are labelled as the wrongdoers (az-zalimin) in the Qur'aan.

You have already completed the Master Level thesis and are now moving on to PhD level. With this kind of narrow understanding of the Qur'aan, you need to go back to the drawing board. The Arabic word in the Qur'aan 2:193 translated as "hostility" is not the same hostility as in English. It is not being hostile as in a war situation.

Therefore, you have made two mistakes in understanding just one verse of the Qur'aan (2:193). We now know you must have made many more in writing your thesis with preconceived ideas about the Qur'aan.

Anyone ignorant of the Qur'aan can do all sorts of wrongdoings with preconceived ideas.
Those who drink alcohol, visit prostitutes or eat pork can also see in the Qur'aan that they can do so.

I knew you have misunderstood the Qur'aan and not only that but you have disregarded the context of these verses just to stick to your preconceived ideas. If this is your big idea, you are going to be very disappointed.

You are pulling a fast one again.
Just because I am new to Arabic, you are under estimating my capability.
While I may lack high expertise in Arabic at present, what I have is a high level of intellectual rigor to ensure I am objective and getting to the bottom of things.

Note the term Udwāna is used in the following with various different contexts;

2:85
Thumma 'Antum Hā'uulā' Taqtulūna 'Anfusakum Wa Tukhrijūna Farīqāan Minkum Min Diyārihim Tažāharūna `Alayhim Bil-'Ithmi Wa Al-`Udwāni Wa 'In Ya'tūkum 'Usārá Tufādūhum Wa Huwa Muĥarramun `Alaykum 'Ikhrājuhum 'A Fatu'uminūna Biba`Đi Al-Kitābi Wa Takfurūna Biba`Đin Famā Jazā'u Man Yaf`alu Dhālika Minkum 'Illā Khizyun Fī Al-Ĥayāati Ad-Dunyā Wa Yawma Al-Qiyāmati Yuraddūna 'Ilá 'Ashaddi Al-`Adhābi Wa Mā Allāhu Bighāfilin `Ammā Ta`malūna
But then here you are killing each other and expelling a group of you from their homes; you act towards them with evil and animosity. And if they come to you as prisoners, you ransom them while it was unlawful for you to expel them! Do you believe in part of the Book and disbelieve in part? The punishment for those among you who do so is humiliation in this worldly life, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be delivered to the most severe retribution. God is not unaware of what you all do.

2:193
Wa Qātilūhum Ĥattá Lā Takūna Fitnatun Wa ***ūna Ad-Dīnu Lillāhi Fa'ini Antahaw Falā `Udwāna 'Illā `Alá Až-žālimīna
And fight them so there is no more persecution, and so that the system is for God. If they cease, then there will be no aggression except against the wicked.

4:30
Wa Man Yaf`al Dhālika `Udwānāan Wa žulmāan Fasawfa Nuşlīhi Nārāan Wa Kāna Dhālika `Alá Allāhi Yasīrāan
And whoever does so out of animosity and transgression, We will cast him to a Fire; and this for God is very easy.

5:2

O you who believe, do not violate the symbols of God, nor the restricted month, nor the donations, nor what is regulated, nor the safety made by the Restricted Sanctuary; for they are seeking a bounty from their Lord and a blessing. And when it is permitted for you, then you may hunt. And let not the hatred of another people; because they had barred you from the Restricted Temple; make you aggress. And help each other in piety and righteousness, and do not help each other in sin and aggression. And be aware of God, for the retribution of God is severe.

5:62
Wa Tará Kathīrāan Minhum Yusāri`ūna Fī Al-'Ithmi Wa Al-`Udwāni Wa 'Aklihimu As-Suĥta Labi'sa Mā Kānū Ya`malūna
And you see many of them hasten to sin and transgression and consuming money illicitly. Miserable indeed is what they were doing.

28:28
Qāla Dhālika Baynī Wa Baynaka 'Ayyamā Al-'Ajalayni QaĐaytu Falā `Udwāna `Alayya Wa Allāhu `Alá Mā Naqūlu Wa Kīlun
He said: "It is then an agreement between me and you. Whichever period I fulfill, you will not be averse to either one. And God is entrusted over what we said."

58:8

Have you noted those who were prohibited from holding meetings in secret, but then they go back to what they have been prohibited from? They meet secretly to commit sin, transgression, and disobedience of the messenger. When they come to you, they greet you with a greeting other than that which God greets you with. They say inside themselves: Why does God not punish us for our utterances? Hell will be sufficient for them, wherein they burn; what a miserable destiny.

58:9
Yā 'Ayyuhā Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū 'Idhā Tanājaytum Falā Tatanājaw Bil-'Ithmi Wa Al-`Udwāni Wa Ma`şiyati Ar-Rasūli Wa Tanājaw Bil-Birri Wa At-Taqwá Wa Attaqū Allāha Al-Ladhī 'Ilayhi Tuĥsharūna
O you who believe, if you must meet secretly, then you shall not meet to commit sin, transgression, and to disobey the messenger. You shall meet to work righteousness and piety. And be aware of God, before whom you will be summoned.
I know 22:28 is it in its respective context, but Udwāna in 2:193 is within a warfare context of 2:190-194
2:190. [0 Muslims] Fight [waqātilū] in the way of Allah against those [infidels] who fight against you [Muslims], but begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loveth not, aggressors.
[First expression of M to establish his religion by the sword] [v190-4]

2:191. And slay [wa qtulouhum: kill] them [infidels] wherever ye [you] find them [infidels],
and drive them [infidels] out of the places whence they [infidels] drove you out,
for persecution [Fitna: oppression] is worse than slaughter [killing].
And fight not with them [infidels] at the Inviolable Place of Worship [Ka'aba] until they [infidels] first attack you there, but if they [infidels] attack you (there) then slay them [infidels].
Such is the reward [penalty, jazao جَزَاء] of disbelievers [infidels].

2:192. But if they [infidels] desist, then lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

2:193. And [O Muslims] fight [waqātilūhum] them [infidels] until persecution [fitnah: oppression] is no more, and religion [alddeenu] is for Allah.
But if they [infidels] desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrongdoers [l-ẓālimīna: oppressors].

2:194. The forbidden month for the forbidden month, and forbidden things in retaliation.
And one [infidels] who attacketh you [Muslims], attack him like manner as he attacked you.
Observe your duty to Allah, and know that Allah is with those [Muslims] who ward off (evil).
If you read 2:190-194 in context, the most appropriate to translate "udawana" is "hostilities" or aggressive retaliations, enmity and the likes which take into account the words used within 2:190-194, i.e. slay, fight, attack, retaliate, slaughter, etc.

So you are wrong in your interpretation of 'undawana' within 2:190-194.
You still dispute it?

So if you have included only the infidels in your Master Level thesis as the wrongdoers, you know now where you had buried your head when writing that thesis.
Btw, the question I raised in the OP is merely to open it up for discussion.
The OP is not specifically raised to ask YOU because I am ignorant of it.

I provided you a list of ALL verses [~100] in the Quran with the term 'az-zalimuna.'
They are used in various contexts and not the same context.
Thus what we do is to analyze and group those of the same context, some relevant and some are not relevant for 2:193.
2:229 is just one of the verse in its specific context and if it is not applicable then we omit it but refer to those contexts that are relevant.

There are many verses in that listing to justify hostilities based on by 'az-zalimuna.'
I will do a detailed and precise listings of those verses that justify hostilities in relation to 'az-zalimuna' re 2:193 from that listing.

Quote:
Here again, if you have written your Master Level thesis, using 2:193 on such basis as you describe here, you have written it in ignorance of what is actually stated in the Qur'aan. The verse 2:193 does not command Muslims to begin hostilities on infidels on the basis of them being mere infidels. The persecutors mentioned in the verse were infidels. The verse commands no hostilities against those who stop the persecutions. Therefore the 'az-zalimina' in the verse is not just infidels or believers but all those doing "zulm" (Muslims included as in 2:229 and other verses).
Nope!
I am not relying on 2:193, 2:216 or 22:38, and a few others for my thesis.

I have mentioned many times, I am relying on the 3,400++ evil laden verses of various degree to support my hypothesis. 2:193 is merely a small part of it.

Why SOME Muslims who are evil prone commit terrible evils and violence is supported by 3,400++ evil laden verses within the relevant context and themes, plus thousands of verses related to eschatology, and others. Eventually I will link all the 6,236 verses [the whole Quran] to the terrible evils and violence committed by SOME evil prone Muslims.

The weightage would be;

3,400++ evil laden verses = 90%
Other 2,836 verses = 10%.

Let's see how you are pulling the fast one here!

Keep in mind that the term ud'wana must be stated in exactly the same way in another verses in order to compare the verse and the meanings.

For this reason, there is only one other verse in the Qur'aan in which ud'wana is written and spoken in exactly the same way as in the verse 2:193. And that verse is 28:28

The word under discussion is: عُدْوَانَ

It is written and spoken in Arabic in exactly the same way as in 2:193:

Can you see the exact same word عُدْوَانَ in this verse too?

Now check with your favorite translator Pickthall to see how he had translated the exact same word:

[28:28] He said: That (is settled) between thee and me. Whichever of the two terms I fulfil, there will be no injustice to me, and Allah is Surety over what we say. (Pickthall)

[2:193] And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrongdoers. (Pickthall)

Pickthall did not translate عُدْوَانَ in both verses the same way. But I notice you have now used the Monotheist translation. Fine!

Let's compare their translation of عُدْوَانَ :

[2:193] And fight them so there is no more persecution, and so that the system is for God. If they cease, then there will be no aggression except against the wicked.

[28:28] He said: "It is then an agreement between me and you. Whichever period I fulfill, you will not be averse to either one. And God is entrusted over what we said."

Even they have translated the same word differently. So how can the same word be "hostility" and "aggression" in 2:193 but "injustice" and "averse" in 28:28?

If you are insisting on this word means "hostility" then why did you present 28:28 as your evidence when it is not hostility but "averse" in that verse. Are you now admitting that both translations, "aggression" and "averse" are correct for the word?

Now let's take out the mess you have added from yourself in the above translation from Pickthall. Then really try to understand these verses properly to see if 2:193 is commanding Muslims to begin hostilities against the infidels/az-zalimin as you had claimed!

[2:190] Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loveth not aggressors. (Pickthall)

[2:190] And fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do
not aggress, God does not love the aggressors. (Monotheist)

So rules of engagement are set quite clearly in this verse:
Fight only if they fight with you but Muslims are not to begin hostilities. Keep this in mind when you try to understand the rest of the verses in context relating to fighting and warfare.

[2:191] And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution is worse than slaughter. And fight not with them at the Inviolable Place of Worship until they first attack you there, but if they attack you (there) then slay them. Such is the reward of disbelievers. (Pickthall)

[2:191] And kill them wherever you encounter them, and expel them from where they expelled you, and know that persecution is worse than being killed. And do not fight them at the Restricted Temple unless they fight you in it; if they fight you then kill them, thus is the recompense of the rejecters. (Monotheist)

The same rule of engagement as in the previous verse.

[2:192] But if they desist, then lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (Pickthall)

[2:192] And if they cease, then God is Forgiving, Merciful. (Monotheist)

If the enemy desist fighting you, then you may forgive them for what they did when they expelled you from your homes near the Ka'ba (Mecca) just as Allah does forgive people.

[2:193] And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrong-doers. (Pickthall)

[2:193] And fight them so there is no more persecution, and so that the system is for God. If they cease, then there will be no aggression except against the wicked. (Monotheist)

Fight those who fight you until their persecution stops and you worship Allah freely without any hindrance. If they do not persecute you and hinder you from worshiping Allah then there should be no ill will except against those who carry on doing evil (wrongdoing). You cannot regard them as your friends.

[2:194] The forbidden month for the forbidden month, and forbidden things in retaliation. And one who attacketh you, attack him in like manner as he attacked you. Observe your duty to Allah, and know that Allah is with those who ward off (evil). (Pickthall)

[2:194] The restricted month is for the restricted month, and wh at is forbidden may be met with retaliation. Whoever attacks you, then you shall attack him the same as he attacked you; and be aware of God, and know that God is with the righteous. (Monotheist)

The rule of engagement is clarified once more so that you can't twist it. No attack from Muslims unless there is attack from the other side first. No hostility from Muslims unless there is hostility from the other side first. No ill-will from Muslims unless there is ill-will from the other side first. The verse 2:194 goes much further as rule of engagement. If an enemy slaps you once, Muslim can't slap him twice. It can only be one slap in return.

This is the most pathetic attempt to describe the word "ud'wana" in the verse 2:193. You are not trying to describe "ud'wana" but trying to draw the readers attention to the other words in these verses. This is trying to deflect the attention to the other words than "ud'wana".

You still dispute it?
The word is recited as "ud'wana" and not "undawana". You can neither write it nor recite it properly. How are you going to know its proper meaning?

You cannot insist that 2:193 is telling us to begin hostility against infidels/az-zalimin just because you saw "hostility" as one of the translations of word "ud'wana" in the verse. This word in the Qur'an has been translated as "injustice", "ill-will, "aggression", "hostility", "transgression", "averse", "enmity" etc. This is so because when there is no perfect translation in English of an Arabic word, it is often translated in several English words. All could be close but not perfect. This lesson must be learnt by you before you insist anything and make silly mistake like, "begin hostility" against infidels.

The "10%" is part of the Qur'aan context that renders "90%" as justice laden verses.

You and evil-doers have no leg to stand on.
