Can any of the Muslims who post (or lurk) on here tell me more about the 12th Imam? I've heard this person mentioned in the media and we have talked about him in the Bible study class I've been taking on eschatology. I'm just interested in knowing a bit more about the Islamic teaching of who this person is and what he will accomplish here on earth in the last days. Anyone care to share?

Mohammed had a sister who was a significant Imam in Islam. She was a judge reverenced by many during her long life. One never hears of the female religious leaders in Islam. There are none today, but the precedent is clear and carried full endorsement from Mohammed himself. Has anyone read the Seven Pillars of Wisdom? Has anyone read the Pearl of Great Price? The basic books are reading required for a beginner's understanding of various religions and persuasions. Only then can an opinion have substance in fact rather than vague sentiment.

i think you meant a wife (aisha) not a sister. as for the 12th Imam, the beleif in the coming of the 12th imam, is only held by Shia Muslims, who are about 15% of all muslims. As for who he is, and what will he accomplish, i will leave that to someone who is more knowledgable about the subject, since i don't think i'm qualified to answer that.

What qualifies for a constructive dialog shared by intelligent, educated, sensitive individuals who must always confront their peculiar individual ignorance... ?

I once met a lawyer who later became a CIA Director (interim) who shook my hand and smiled and said, "I have always wanted to meet someone smarter than me." Without a blink, I smiled and replied, "That's my job." Every individual hosts a unique perspective/perception and world view shared by no other human being. In this, they are 'smarter' than anyone else... I didn't know he was CIA at the time. I had been told a middle level security manager in civil service wanted to meet me to discuss a job. Its the mindset of those given the understanding that it is "their job" as security specialists to 'know more than anyone else' about matters of importance and to this kind of perspective...my retort was profoundly cheeky. That is, until he realized I had not been told he was CIA. I never walked with him, but remained in my lowly calling as teacher.

i am starved for the right kind of interaction with peers of similar disposition and intellectual reach. i have been consigned to the lowest ranks of labor to scrap out a living to do penance for having refused patronage by power players. Only a fool, or a martyr wants to wear a hood as if it were a virtue. Virtute Non Verbis? Logon Didonai

I took a class on Islamic Mysticism when I was an undergraduate at the University of Arizona. During that course I also read the Seven Pillars of Wisdom... Of course, having a faint introduction to Islam does not make me an authority, but it does equip me as a reasonably informed novice for conversation.

I respect superior experience and training...and am teachable because I understand that no matter how one may be prepared for any subject/expertise... they only approach mastery due to the persistence of ignorance and limited perspective.

Within the Shiite, (which is predominate in Iran), it is prophesied that there is a coming 12th Imam who is the great spiritual savior. This Imam is named Abu al-Qasim Muhammad or also called Muhammad al Mahdi. He is said to have been born the son of the 11th Imam, Hasan Al-Askari and his wife, the granddaughter of an Emperor.

Most accounts of the story say that al Mahdi went into hiding as a child around the age of 5 years (about 13th Century). It said he has been ‘in hiding’ in caves ever since but will supernaturally return just before the Day of Judgment. According to the Hadith the criteria for the Hidden Imam are:
  • He will be a descendant of Muhammad and the son of Fatima
  • Will have a broad forehead and pointed nose
  • Will return just before the end of the world
  • His appearance will be preceded by a number of prophetic events during 3 years of horrendous world chaos, tyranny and oppression
  • Will escape from Madina to Mekkah, thousands will pledge allegiance to him
  • Will rule over the Arabs and the world for 7 years
  • Will eradicate all tyranny and oppression bringing harmony and total peace
  • Will lead a prayer in Mekkah which Jesus will be at his side and follow
12th Imam

Default Great Men Emerge as Cultural Necessity...

It is the voice of Islam that presents the special cypher called the 12th Imam. It is predictive in that Islam expects to articulate a unique statement by means of a unique persona. The dynamic of history presents the circumstance out of which an exigency PRODUCES an effect. It is an algorithmic and compelling pattern intended to divide and conquer opposition.
The catalyst speaks.
