Political leaders have found out (a long time ago) that if you can integrate religion into your governing power you have a much greater hold over the people (see kings, pharos, etc...).
That the religion has been usurped by power hungry leaders should not cloud what the religion truly says and how it is perceived by most of its followers.
Full disclosure: I'm a devout atheist and think that all religions are equal in their ignorance.
