Blame it on mental illness. Why did he only try to decapitate his own parents after he converted to Islam? Surely he was mentally ill before he converted. Yet he never tried to kill his own parents in 43 years of his life – until he converted to Islam, that is.

Quite a few people convert to Islam every year. Many perhaps most have non-Muslim parents.
This is the only story I can finde where a Muslm convert murdered his parents because the were not Muslim

its not 'commonplace' but converts turning to violence isnt uncommon in islam. such as the recent terrorists in Canada. the shoe bomber. etc.
My own suspicion is they were violent to begin witjh. the believe some of the hate stories about Islam and decide that is what they want it to be about.
Many of the UK, Canada, Autralia and US recruits to ISIS are recent converts.
They have converted for the wrong reason and seek violence.

of course they are. but violent people also convert to other religions and they actually become better people instead.
the only difference here is that those folks converted into the violent extremist form of islam.
Converts to a religion are usually more gung-ho, than persons born into it.
